Men’s Basketball Suffers Double Overtime Loss

Carlson’s 20 points leads all scorers

FULLERTON, Calif. – Competing in their first overtime contest of the season, the No. 13 Red Raider men's basketball team (11-2, 5-1 GPAC) dropped a 79-76 double OT decision to Hope International (Calif.) (8-3, 0-0 GSAC) on Wednesday in Darling Pavillion.

In a game that saw the lead change hands and both teams build up significant leads, it took two extra frames to decide a winner. The opening minutes of the first half saw the Raiders create a slight advantage, building up a 13-10 lead on a Conner Geddes (Jr., Harrisburg, S.D.) trey before Hope International scored 17 of the next 20 points to force a Raider timeout and go up 27-16 with just over six minutes until the break. Northwestern then put an impressive run together to end the opening 20 minutes, going on a 14-4 run fueled by seven points from Alex Van Kalsbeek (So., Sheldon, Iowa), coming within a point at halftime.

Northwestern continued its strong play into the second, going ahead 43-39 on back-to-back jumpers by Van Kalsbeek with 12:47 in regulation. Despite both teams trading points over the next six minutes, Dillon Carlson (Sr., Ankeny, Iowa) gave the Raiders their largest lead of the half on a three that made it 60-53 with under five to go. The Royals then went on a 9-2 run over three and a half minutes before Keyton Moser (Sr., Hull, Iowa) and HIU's Cameron Dashiell each scored in the closing seconds to spark free basketball.

Carlson opened the first overtime period with a three, and after a couple of Royals free throws, Van Kalsbeek took over, scoring the next six points to give his team a seven-point advantage with two minutes on the clock. HIU countered by forcing a pair of turnovers and scoring seven points in 50 seconds to add another five minutes of play.

The Raiders could only muster up one made field goal in the second overtime, as Hope International used a 5-0 run to remain undefeated on their home floor.
