Strong Post Play Leads Red Raiders to Victory over Trinity Christian

Schany records 20+ points in back-to-back games

PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. – The Northwestern College women's basketball team (1-0, 0-0 GPAC) used a major post presence to run past the Trolls of Trinity Christian College (0-2, 0-0 CCAC) Saturday afternoon to wrap up the trip to the Chicagoland. Molly Schany makes it back-to-back games with 20+ points, while a pair of freshmen in Akaysa Duitscher and Jenna Kluxdal record their first-career collegiate points.
On the first offensive possession of the day, the Red Raiders continued to control the boards early with a pair of offensive rebounds. After Trinity Christian converted the first bucket of the game, Hali Anderson (Jr., St. Ansgar, Iowa) gave the Red Raiders the lead with a 3-pointer, making it 4-2, and the Red Raiders never looked back. A pair of lay-ups from Emily TerWee (Fr., Lachwood, Iowa) would quickly extend the Northwestern lead up to 8-2 and Northwestern would continue to lay it on. Northwestern would build up a 23-8 lead by the end of the first quarter, using a 19-4 run in the frame. TerWee dominated in the paint for the Red Raiders in the opening quarter, leading the team with her eight points.

Northwestern continued to dominate down low, scoring multiple times off second chance opportunities thanks to offensive rebounds. The Trolls used the deep ball to try and work their way back into the contest. By midway through the frame, the Red Raiders held an 11-point lead at 28-17. NWC would build on that lead as the half wound down, making it 40-21 at the halftime break.

An impressive 65% of the team's first half points came from Red Raider post players, as Molly Schany (Sr., Emmetsburg, Iowa) and TerWee led the team with 10 and eight points, respectively.

The Red Raiders continued to build up a lead, leading by 20 points with five minutes left to go in the third (48-28). Post touches continued as TerWee joined Schany in double digits in the quarter. Anderson continued to spark the offense with steals, as the Red Raiders would held to the fourth quarter with the 60-38 advantage. TerWee also recorded both of her blocks in the third quarter.

The Red Raiders flexed their muscles in the final frame as early in the quarter Anderson went coast-to-coast for a layup. Anderson took over the contest in the fourth, as she would lead the team in steals by the end of the game. The fourth quarter saw Rotert extend the bench with a total of 13 Red Raiders recording minutes in the contest.  The lead continued to build up to the largest of the day with just over a minute left in the contest with a 38-point lead, as Northwestern would leave the Chicagoland with a 2-0 record after an 87-54 win over the Trolls.
