NWC Drops Home Opener to No. 22 Mayville State

Molly Schany drops first-career 30-point game, sets new career-high

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The Northwestern College women's basketball team (2-1, 0-0 GPAC) battled against No. 22-ranked Mayville State (N.D.) (4-0, 0-0 NSAA) but dropped an 87-81 contest to the Comets on the first day of the 2023 Pizza Ranch Classic. Molly Schany dropped 32 points in the effort, setting a new career-high, along with a game-high 10 rebounds.

The nationally-ranked Comets used an explosive 24-point quarter, shooting a blistering 81.8% (9-for-11) from the field and led by nine points from Jordan Zrust. The Red Raiders traded buckets early on, but the hot shooting from the Comets saw them open up as much as a nine-point lead near the end of the quarter. The Red Raiders would be led early by eight points in the opening frame from Hali Anderson (Jr., Saint Ansgar, Iowa), who knocked down both of her attempts from deep in the frame. Mayville State would hold a 24-18 after the first 10 minutes.

Mayville State would cool off in the second quarter, but would continue to hold a two-possession lead most of the quarter. Trailing by eight with under four minutes to play, a Schany (Sr., Emmetsburg, Iowa) lay-up would spark a Northwestern push late in the half. Down 42-35, the Red Raiders would score the final six points of the half with four points from Kaydin Davis (Sr., Buffalo, Wyo.) to cut the deficit down to 42-41 at the halftime break.

It would be the Comets coming out strong to start the second half, building up their first double-digit lead of the game with a 55-45 lead with 5:40 left to go in the third. Northwestern would pull within five a couple of times the rest of the quarter, despite a combined 14 points from Schany and Anderson in the quarter. Mayville State would take a 66-60 lead into the final quarter of play.

MSU would keep it within an eight- to nine-point lead through the first couple of minutes, but some offensive rebounds and post play from Schany and Maren Nerem (Jr., Edgerton, Minn.) would see Northwestern cut the lead to 73-69 with seven minutes to play. The Raiders would continue to chip away at the deficit and would pull even at 75-75 with just under four minutes to play. Northwestern would take their first lead with a Schany bucket (79-78) with two and a half minutes to play, but the Comets would score nine unanswered points to prevail. Schany scored 10 points in the fourth quarter, scoring double-digits in a quarter for the second time on the evening, but would just not be enough. Mayville State would take the contest 87-81.

  • Molly Schany collected her second double-double of the season (32 points, 10 rebounds); her third-straight 20-point performance.
