Northwestern Tops (RV) IU Northwest to Open the Season

The team rebounds and +30-rebounding advantage are Rotert era highs for a single game

PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. – The Northwestern College women's basketball team (1-0, 0-0 GPAC) started their third-straight season under Kristin Rotert with a win, downing (RV) Indiana University Northwest (1-1, 0-0 CCAC), 63-52, in a neutral site contest on the campus of Trinity Christian College. Molly Schany paced the team with her 20 points and 11 rebounds for her 13th-career double-double.
Northwestern jumped out to an early 6-0 first quarter lead, as Emily TerWee (Fr., Larchwood, Iowa) notched the first points of the season with a lay-up on the opening possession. Kaydin Davis (Sr., Buffalo, Wyo.) scored her first points as a Red Raider with back-to-back 3-pointers to extend the lead early. After building up a 12-2 lead, the RedHawks spent the rest of the quarter chipping into that lead, as NWC led 14-12 at the end of the first quarter of play.

The two teams traded buckets to open the second quarter of play. Five minutes into the second quarter, Indiana Northwest took their first lead of the game with a lay-up to make it 19-18 RedHawks. Northwestern went on a 10-0 run to end the half, as IU Northwest went cold and didn't score for nearly six minutes the rest of the quarter. The Red Raiders would take a 29-23 lead into the halftime break. 25 of the 29 first half points came from the starting five in the contest, led by TerWee's seven points. Schany (Sr., Emmetsburg, Iowa) led the team with five rebounds and added six points, while Davis also added six points.

Northwestern started strong in the third quarter, building up another 10-point lead in the quarter. Schany began to heat up in the frame, hitting four of her last five shots in the quarter. Yet again, the RedHawks continued to show some fight, cutting that deficit back down to just three by the end of the quarter at 44-41, Red Raiders.

The fourth quarter would heat up between the two teams as the quarter started with a one possession lead for Northwestern. Schany would take over the game for the Red Raiders, scoring eight of the team's 19 fourth quarter points. NWC built up another double-digit lead in the frame, thanks to the post play and going 9-of-12 from the free throw line to hold off the Red Hawks to pick up a win to start the season for the third-straight year, 63-52.
