Van Kalsbeek Powers Northwestern Past IU East in Season Opener

Van Kalsbeek with 21 points, Carlson adds 17

RICHMOND, Ind. – A late bucket in the paint by Alex Van Kalsbeek secured Northwestern's (1-0, 0-0 GPAC) season-opening win, as the Raiders took a 75-72 win on the road at Indiana University East (0-1, 0-0 RSC).

"It was a fun win on the road," head coach Kris Korver commented. "There was a great college basketball environment with a full house."

Northwestern started quickly, jumping out to a double-digit lead in the first six minutes of the contest when Dillon Carlson (Sr., Ankeny, Iowa) hit his second of four treys to put his team ahead 16-6. Extending their lead even further through the next 10 minutes of play, Carlson notched another three to give Northwestern its largest lead of the game at 28-15 with 6:19 remaining in the first half.

IU East went on a quick 9-2 run in the waning moments of the first half, cutting the lead to four, but the Raiders responded with five unanswered points by Carlson to go into the locker room with a nine-point advantage.

Both teams scored early and often out of the gate in the second, highlighted by a Craig Sterk (Sr., McBain, Mich.) slam to go up 10 at the 18:50 mark. Then, with 13 minutes to play, the Red Wolves cut the deficit down to one at 55-54, its lowest point since tip-off. Kasen Bailey (Fr., Washington, Iowa) gave the Raiders some space before IU East proceeded to tie and take the lead with just under six minutes to play.

Van Kalsbeek (So., Sheldon, Iowa) took over down the stretch, scoring six of the final nine points for Northwestern, including a turnaround in the paint with 14 seconds to give Northwestern a 75-72 lead.

The Red Wolves had a couple of opportunities from deep to tie the game in the closing seconds, but Northwestern escaped to start the season 1-0.

"We battled through some adversity and found a way. Now we need to prepare well to finish off the weekend tomorrow," Korver said.
