LaFave Hits Career-High; Men's Basketball Improves to 2-0

Three Raiders score in double-figures

RICHMOND, Ind. – Northwestern (2-0, 0-0 GPAC) finished the weekend 2-0 at the IU East Classic, led by a career-high 21 points for Zach LaFave, defeating Oakland City (Ind.) (1-1, 0-0 RSC) 72-66.

The Red Raiders got out to a good start, using a LaFave (Jr., Elkhorn, Neb.) dunk and solid free throw shooting from Alex Van Kalsbeek (So., Sheldon, Iowa) to jump ahead 7-3 in the opening minutes. After Oakland City took the lead, 11-9 with 14:37 on the clock, the Mighty Oaks pushed their advantage to as many as 13 points at 32-19. Northwestern responded in the final two minutes, inching into the deficit with buckets by Van Kalsbeek and Dillon Carlson (Sr., Ankeny, Iowa), also using a three-pointer by Hunter Berry (Sr., Bolivar, Mo.) to come within one at the half.

Northwestern regained the lead in the half's opening seconds on Carlson's jumper and built up momentum for the minutes ahead. They opened the half on an 8-0 run before OCU tied it back up at 45-45 with 14 minutes to play. LaFave then helped his team take their largest lead of the day, scoring five in a row by himself with a slam dunk mixed in to go up 59-52.

Closing it out with free throws and defense, the Raiders earned their second win of the season ahead of the long road trip home.
