Red Raider Upset Bid Falls Short at No. 2 Dordt

Anderson and Jones both drop 18 points in the contest

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – The (RV) Northwestern College women's basketball team (5-3, 2-2 GPAC) attempted an upset bid against rival and No. 2-ranked Dordt University (9-0, 4-0 GPAC), but fell 81-78 Wednesday night inside DeWitt Gymnasium, playing the Defenders the toughest of any team so far this season.

It was the post play for the Red Raiders that got things going as Molly Schany (Sr., Emmetsburg, Iowa) and Emily TerWee (Fr., Larchwood, Iowa) got things going with points early. Dordt turnovers led to quick Red Raider points as Northwestern looked to push the ball early on in the contest. Back-to-back steals for the Raider defense led to five quick points, as the Red Raiders broke the tie and took a 9-4 lead on the Defenders. Northwestern built up an early nine-point lead, forcing Dordt to burn an early time out five minutes into the contest. Northwestern would lead by as many as 11 points late in the frame, as they continued to attack in the paint and hold the Defenders to just one shot on their possessions.

Maddie Jones (Gr., Twin Lakes, Iowa) hit a quick three early in the second quarter, as Northwestern continued to build upon their first quarter lead. Unselfish play and ball movement was the key in the second quarter, as the Red Raiders continued to make the extra pass for the easy buckets. The Defenders would look to make a push in front of the home crowd, but Northwestern continued to find answered and hold onto their lead into the halftime break, leading 44-36.

Seven of the eight Red Raiders who saw minutes in the first half put points on the board in a very balanced scoring half, led by Hali Anderson (Jr., Saint Ansgar, Iowa) and her nine points. Schany and Jones both added eight points, while Schany also brought down a team-high six rebounds and recorded a block.

The Defenders opened the second half on a 9-0 run to take their first lead at 45-44 since it was 2-0 early in the contest. From then on, the two rivals would battle tooth and nail for the remainder of the quarter, but it would be Dordt who heated up from the floor in the quarter, shooting 57.9% to climb back into the contest. Dordt outscored NWC 24-16 in the frame, but the seven points in the quarter from Jones kept Northwestern in it as the two teams would head to the fourth quarter knotted up at 60-60.

Dordt opened the final 10 minutes on a 9-3 run to open up a six-point lead at 69-63. Trailing by five with just under five to go, Northwestern would go on their own spurt of nine-straight points as Anderson knocked down a pair of three-pointers to give NWC the 75-74 lead with three minutes to play. Down the stretch, Dordt would make a pair of lay-ups and convert at the free throw line as the Red Raider upset bid would fall just short in Sioux Center with Dordt prevailing 81-78.
