Three-Pointer in Final Seconds Puts Northwestern Back in the Win Column

Lexie Van Kekerix hits game-winner, ties career-high with nine points

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The (RV) Northwestern College women's basketball team (5-2, 2-1 GPAC) go back into the win column thanks to a late three-pointer from Lexie Van Kekerix with just seconds left on the clock as the Red Raiders prevail over (RV) Jamestown (3-3, 1-2 GPAC), 72-70, inside the Bultman Center Tuesday night.
A close contest to begin the game as the Jimmies and Red Raiders put up a combined 30 points in the opening frame, as the Jimmies led 16-14 after one. All five Northwestern starters put points on the board in the opening 10 minutes, as Maren Nerem (Jr., Edgerton, Minn.) added three off the bench.

Hali Anderson (Jr., Saint Ansgar, Iowa) put up a quarter-high nine points of her team-high 17 points in the second quarter. Northwestern would close out the half on a 19-6 run, as Anderson and Van Kekerix (Jr., Rock Valley, Iowa) both contributed six points in the run. Northwestern held a nine-point 38-29 lead at the break.

Kaydin Davis (Sr., Buffalo, Wyo.) came out of the gates in the second half red hot from the floor, scoring the first eight Northwestern points of the half with back-to-back 3-pointers. Her hot start sparked a 13-4 Red Raider run in the third quarter, opening up proved to be their largest lead of the game at 51-36 with six minutes left in the frame.

The next four minutes saw the Jimmies go on a 9-0 run to cut that lead to just six (53-47), but an Akaysa Duitscher (Fr., Rolfe, Iowa) three and an and-one from fellow freshman Emily TerWee (Larchwood, Iowa) would kill the Jamestown run and momentum and open back up a double-digit lead, as the Red Raiders would have the 59-49 advantage at the end of the third quarter.

However, the Jimmes would prove to be a tough team to put away. It was nearly two minutes into the final frame before any points were put on the board. But with tenacity, the Jimmies would mount a 19-5 run in the first eight minutes of the frame to retake their first lead since it was 23-19 early in the second quarter at 68-64, as just three Jimmies led the charge to mount a comeback.

Northwestern would respond with an 8-2 run to close out the game. Beginning with a pair of free throws from Molly Schany (Sr., Emmetsburg, Iowa), the Jimmies would take another four-point lead (70-66) with 54 seconds on the clock, but that would prove to be their last scoring play. A free throw and a lay-up from Schany would pull Northwestern to one point (70-69, UJ). Following a time out, a set play for Van Kekerix would drill what proved to be the game-winning three with three seconds on the clock. Jamestown would be unable to get off another shot, as Northwestern prevailed 72-70 in front of the home crowd.
