Men's Basketball Takes Win in Conference Opener

Carlson and Van Kalsbeek notch 17 points each

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – Dillon Carlson hit a late three to put Northwestern (5-0, 1-0 GPAC) up by four, as the Raiders remained undefeated with a win over Concordia (Neb.) (3-2, 0-2 GPAC) in Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) action.

"It was a tough, physical battle," commented head coach Kris Korver. "We made some big plays down the stretch when we needed it. A good way to start GPAC play. I'm proud of these guys!"

The visiting Bulldogs took a 12-7 lead through the first five minutes before Northwestern's offense began to click, with Carlson (Sr., Ankeny, Iowa) hitting from beyond the arc on consecutive possessions to give the Red Raiders an 18-16 lead. After Northwestern took the lead, both teams went cold for three minutes before Keyton Moser (Sr., Hull, Iowa) scored the next five Raider points, building an 11-1 run to go up 23-17.

Zach LaFave (Jr., Elkhorn, Neb.) then energized the Bultman Center, using a thunderous one-handed dunk to go up by seven. On the following possession, LaFave continued to make big plays, stealing the ball away and throwing it down with a reverse jam to give Northwestern its largest lead of the night at 29-20.

Concordia began to chip away over the next five minutes, using a Bradley Bennett layup to take the lead with 1:44 left in the half. Conner Geddes (Jr., Harrisburg, S.D.) had the last word, however, scoring in the paint to give his team a 40-39 halftime lead.

Northwestern never relinquished the lead after that, opening up a 48-41 lead on a 12-2 run capped off by an and-one dunk from Craig Sterk (Sr., McBain, Mich.). The Bulldogs, though, would not give up the fight, going on a 7-0 run over 90 seconds to come within one.

With one minute remaining and Northwestern leading 75-72, the Raiders missed the front end of a 1-and-1, and Noah Schutte responded by getting into the paint and once again making it a one-point game at 75-74.

On the next possession, Carlson hit one of the most clutch shots of his Northwestern career, stepping back for three and draining it to ice it at 78-74.
