Raiders Defeat Jamestown, End Home Stand 4-0

Sterk posts 24 points, LaFave ties career-high 12 rebounds

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – A Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) battle saw Northwestern (6-0, 2-0 GPAC) receive a test from Jamestown (2-5, 1-2 GPAC) on Tuesday night, as the Raiders came back from deficits multiple times en route to a 74-61 home win.

The Red Raiders appeared to be the dominant team in the opening minutes, building up a 12-2 lead with a 9-0 run, holding the Jimmies scoreless for nearly five minutes. Northwestern's lead ballooned to double-digits once in the first half, with Alex Van Kalsbeek (So., Sheldon, Iowa) scoring in the paint to make it 16-5.

Although the Raider lead was around nine points through the middle of the frame, Jamestown inched back before Cole Woodford used a three and a jumper to give the Jimmies their first lead at 28-27 with under four minutes. Trailing by three with 90 seconds until halftime, Craig Sterk (Sr., McBain, Mich.) put his defender on a poster to come within one. Ahead of the break, Silas Bennion knocked down a pair of free throws to put the visitors ahead 32-29 at halftime.

Northwestern opened the second half on a 6-0 run on the part of Sterk and Van Kalsbeek's scoring, forcing a Jamestown timeout less than three minutes in. The timeout proved to be effective, as Jamestown regained the lead at 44-42, but Keyton Moser (Sr., Hull, Iowa) once again provided a timely bucket to knot up the score. From that point, Northwestern's offense began to heat up, as Kaleb Booth (So., Carroll, Iowa) drained one of his four made threes to give his team a 60-51 lead with 6:18 on the clock. Minutes later, Booth and Dillon Carlson (Sr., Ankeny, Iowa) hit consecutive threes to close out an 8-0 run and put the Raiders up by 12 as the clock dipped below a minute.

GAME NOTES
  • Zach LaFave (Jr., Elkhorn, Neb.) stuffed the stat sheet, putting up eight points, 12 rebounds, eight assists, and five blocks.
  • His 12 boards matched a career-high, while the five blocks surpassed his previous of three.
  • Craig Sterk led all scorers with a season-high 24 points.
  • Sterk is just four points away from moving into the top-15 on Northwestern's all-time scoring list.
  • Dillon Carlson reached double-figures for the sixth time this season, being the only Raider to score at least 10 points in each game.
  • Kaleb Booth knocked down four threes, scoring 14 points.
  • Northwestern shot 44.6% from the field and limited Jamestown to 36.5% shooting.
