Northwestern Victorious in League Opener Over College of Saint Mary

Maddie Jones cracks 400 career assists in the GPAC opener

OMAHA, Neb. – The Northwestern College women's basketball team (4-1, 1-0 GPAC) put up 20+ points in two quarters on Wednesday night on the way to a 77-47 victory inside the Lied Fitness Center against the College of Saint Mary Flames (1-3, 1-0 GPAC) to open the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) schedule in Omaha.
The College of Saint Mary started the scoring with an and-one opportunity right out of the gates, but it was Northwestern that jumped out to a 22-12 lead after the first quarter of play in Omaha. After the opening points, a 9-0 run from the Red Raiders gave them the fast 9-3 advantage, as Hali Anderson (Jr., Saint Ansgar, Iowa) knocked down five of the points with a 3-pointer and a jumper.

The Flames would find ways to keep within striking distance of the Red Raiders in the second quarter, despite shooting just 29.6 percent in the first half. The second quarter saw Northwestern utilize the some of the bench as Ellie Karolevitz (So., Yankton, S.D.) saw seven second quarter minutes and knocked down a jumper (three points total) and had three rebounds. A four-point spurt in the final minute of the half saw the Red Raiders nearly push their lead to double digits at 33-24.

At the halftime break, Molly Schany (Sr., Emmetsburg, Iowa) led all scorers with her eight points, while Maddie Jones (Gr., Twin Lakes, Iowa) racked up seven rebounds and three assists in the first 20 minutes of action. Off the bench, joining Karolevitz, saw Maren Nerem (Jr., Edgerton, Minn.) and Akaysa Duitscher (Fr., Rolfe, Iowa) in the opening half.

The Red Raiders quickly extended their lead back up to double digits in the third quarter and never looked back. Karolevitz would collect her career-high sixth rebound in the frame, with a full quarter yet to be played. Northwestern cracked a 20-point lead in the frame thanks to a three-pointer from Jones, making it 49-29 with a minute in a half left in the quarter. Northwestern held a 51-36 lead heading to the fourth quarter after a 7-2 Flame run in the last minute and a half of the third.

The Flames would look to cut into the lead in the final quarter, but Northwestern cleaned up the boards and kept the College of Saint Mary, eventually extending their lead back up to 20 points, 66-46, with just over three minutes to play. A 15-1 run in the final four minutes would push the lead up to 30 points, as the Red Raiders leave Omaha with the 77-47 victory.
