Comeback Falls Short Against No. 11 Concordia

Maddie Jones moves into seventh all-time in program history in assists

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The Northwestern College women's basketball team (4-2, 1-1 GPAC) attempted to cut into a 19-point second half deficit Saturday evening inside the Bultman Center, but fell short in a 77-69 loss to No. 11-ranked Concordia (Neb.) (4-0, 2-0 GPAC). Graduate student Maddie Jones moves into sole possession of seventh-place all-time in program history in assists with her game-high five.

A slow start of the gate for both sides, as the No. 11-ranked Bulldogs would hold a slim 12-10 lead after the first 10 minutes, as the Red Raider defense held Concordia to a mere 13.3% from the floor (2-for-15). Into the second quarter, a fast break lay-up from Ellie Karolevitz (So., Yankton, S.D.) would give the Red Raiders a 16-14 lead with just under eight minutes left to go in the half.

A few minutes later, a five-point swing by the Bulldogs would see them take their largest lead of the first half at the time at 23-18. Back-to-back three-pointers would extend that lead up to six. The Bulldogs would begin to heat up from deep in the latter half of the second quarter, shooting 45.5% (5-for-11) from deep in the quarter and would lead by as many as 10. Northwestern would cut the deficit to six at the halftime break, 35-29.

Midway through the third quarter, after the two teams traded baskets to open the second half, Concordia would build their lead back up to double-digits. A six-point run would extend their lead up to 13, 50-37, with under five to play in the frame. The lead would be as much as 16 in the quarter, but the Red Raiders would come out swinging in the final quarter.

The Red Raiders saw their largest deficit of the game in the fourth quarter at 19 points, but also arguably their best basketball of the night in the final five minutes of the contest. Staring the deficit in the face, nine points from Emily TerWee (Fr., Larchwood, Iowa) and the spark was lit. Northwestern went on a 13-0 run, which forced Concordia to call a time out suddenly seeing their lead evaporate to just six points 71-65 with a minute remaining. However, Concordia would convert at the charity strike down the stretch and would walk out with a 77-69 victory.
