Northwestern Downs Spires for First Home Win of the Season

Four Red Raiders score in double digits

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The Northwestern College women's basketball team (3-1, 0-0 GPAC) picked up their first home win of the season with a 78-68 win over the University of Saint Mary (Kan.) (2-2, 0-0 KCAC) on Day 2 of the 2023 Pizza Ranch Classic. Molly Schany records her fourth-straight game with at least 20 points and notches her third double-double of the season.
A strong first half set the tone for the Red Raiders on the second day of the Pizza Ranch Classic, outscoring the University of Saint Mary by 10 points in the second quarter to take a 15-point, 30-24 lead into the locker room.

Northwestern came out of the gate strong, jumping out to an early nine-point lead in the first quarter at 13-4. Five quick points, including a three, from Hali Anderson (Jr., Saint Ansgar, Iowa) sparked the Red Raider's offense early. The Spires would look to make a push in the final half of the quarter, but a pair of fast break buckets by Red Raider guards kept the momentum up early for the home squad, as Northwestern would hold a 19-14 lead after the first 10 minutes.

The second quarter was a slow start for both sides, as the first point would not be scored until over two minutes into the quarter. Northwestern would go on to outscore the Spires 20-10 in the quarter, utilizing the free throw line with a 10-for-13 mark in the second quarter with all attempts coming between Schany (Sr., Emmetsburg, Iowa) and Maddie Jones (Gr., Twin Lakes, Iowa). A lay-up from Kaydin Davis (Sr., Buffalo, Wyo.) would give the Red Raiders their first double-digit lead of the contest, and free throws from Schany and Jones would extend that double-digit lead up to 15 at 39-24 at the break. The Red Raiders utilized a 6-0 run at the end of the half to build their lead.

Early in the second half, Northwestern maintained their double-digit lead with a balanced scoring attack. Saint Mary would use the three-ball to try and get back into the game, but the Red Raiders used a 46.7% mark from the floor to keep the Spires at bay.

Into the fourth quarter, head coach Kristin Rotert looked to her bench to get minutes and experience with Northwestern still leading by double digits. Immediately out of the gate, a three from Jones put the lead at 16 and the Red Raiders would go on to build their largest lead of the contest at 19 points, 71-52. The Spires heavily relied on the three-ball in the final frame, putting up nine attempts in the quarter. Off the bench, Maren Nerem (Jr., Edgerton, Minn.) would put up all five of her points on the board in the final 10 minutes.

GAME NOTES:
