Northwestern Hangs On for Win Over Bellevue

Van Kalsbeek's fourth game in double-figures, Sterk adds 17

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The No. 18-ranked Northwestern men's basketball team (4-0, 0-0 GPAC) ended its first home weekend with a win over Bellevue (Neb.) (0-6, 0-0 NSAA) to conclude the Pizza Ranch Classic.

It was a back-and-forth contest for the first 10 minutes, with the lead changing hands nine times. The largest lead of the opening of the half was held by Northwestern when Alex Van Kalsbeek (So., Sheldon, Iowa) hit a shot in the paint to give the Raiders a 21-16 advantage. Northwestern eventually built up to a double-digit lead on a Zach LaFave (Jr., Elkhorn, Neb.) three-pointer, before Bellevue's Makeem Loudermill cut the deficit to six ahead of the half.

With Northwestern taking a 33-25 lead into the second half, the Bruins tied the game and eventually took the lead at 36-33 on consecutive treys by Christian Carter and Jerome Bynum. Then, with 17:01 on the clock, Craig Sterk (Sr., McBain, Mich.) helped the Raiders regain the lead with a layup and a three on back-to-back possessions, going up 40-36.

The Red Raiders began to pull away through the midway point of the second half, with Dillon Carlson (Sr., Ankeny, Iowa) knocking down a three to put his team up by 11 points. Bellevue attempted to hang around, but never got closer than six points before Northwestern iced the game with free throws, winning 69-58.
