Block Party Lifts Northwestern to Their 16th Sweep of the Season

Zavyr Metzger ties career-high with 11 blocks, NWC records 16 in the victory

HASTINGS, Neb. – The No. 2-ranked Northwestern College volleyball team (17-2, 8-2 GPAC) picked up their second sweep in as many days in the state of Nebraska over the Hastings Broncos (7-12, 2-8 GPAC), dominating the first (25-9) and third sets (25-14) and recording 16 blocks in the victory. Zavyr Metzger ties her career-high with 11 blocks in the sweep.
Hastings recorded the first point of the match but five-straight points from the Red Raiders saw the momentum completely swing to the NWC side. A run of 9-2 would put the set squarely in control of Northwestern, who would lead 14-5 at the time. Leading 17-9, Northwestern would score the final eight points of the set to dominate it 25-9. In the final run four different Red Raiders recorded a kill and Alysen Dexter (Jr., Urbandale, Iowa) had two service aces. The first set also saw Northwestern have seven blocks as a team.

In the odd set out of the afternoon, the second set would be played to extra points but it would be the Red Raiders who prevailed for a 2-0 match lead. Hastings would jump out to an 8-4 lead but the Red Raiders would battle back to even it up at 9-9. From that point on in the set, neither team would lead by more than two points and the score would be tied a total of 10 times. Hastings would hold a 22-20 lead late as the Red Raiders would talk it over. Out of the time out, three-straight points with a pair of kills from Jazlin De Haan (Jr., Orange City, Iowa) would see the Red Raiders take a 23-22 lead. Once again tied up at 24-24, a kill from Macay Van't Hul (Jr., Rock Valley, Iowa) and a Bronco attacking error would give the Red Raiders the set, 26-24.

In what would be the final set of the afternoon, the Red Raiders would once again show why they are a top-5 team in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). Hastings would use a 7-0 run trailing 7-5 to take the 12-5 advantage. However, not to be outdone, Northwestern would take 14 of the next 15 points to take complete control of the set, including an 8-0 run, to take a 21-13 lead. The final kill from Hastings would result in the final four points of the match be scored, thanks to a pair of kills from Savonne Sterk (Jr., Lynden, Wash.) and a block from Zavyr Metzger (So., Larchwood, Iowa) and De Haan as NWC took set three, 25-14.
