No. 3 Northwestern Completes Season Sweep of Mustangs

Alysen Dexter hit lights out with 16 kills on a .455 hitting percentage

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The No. 3-ranked Northwestern College volleyball team (18-2, 9-2 GPAC) adds to their current win streak, moving it to four-straight wins, completing the season sweep of the Morningside Mustangs (11-14, 4-7 GPAC) and picking up their 16th sweep of the season. Alysen Dexter hit a blistering 0.455 to pace the Red Raider attack.
The opening set was a battle from start to finish against a scrappy Morningside squad inside the Bultman Center. Morningside took an early lead in the set, but six-straight points, with five Mustang attacking errors, for the Red Raiders with Jazlin De Haan (Jr., Orange City, Iowa) behind the service line gave NWC a 10-7 lead. The Mustangs would burn their first time out when NWC scored three-straight to lead 15-11. Following a second Morningside time out, the Mustangs went on a 6-2 run to even the match at 19-19 and it would be a back and forth affair the rest of the opening set. Northwestern led 22-21, but two-straight points for the Mustangs made it 23-22; and Morningside would hold the first set point at 25-24 and Kyle Van Den Bosch would call a very strategic time out. Whatever Van Den Bosch told the team in the huddle worked, because the Red Raiders would score three-straight points with a pair of kills from De Haan as Northwestern took the opening set 27-25.

The back and forth trend would continue in the early part of set two, but NWC would take control at 12-6 with five-straight points, thanks to a pair of kills from Dexter (Jr., Urbandale, Iowa) in the run. Following a Morningside time out, the two teams traded points again until the next Mustang time out with NWC leading 18-13. Northwestern would finish the set taking seven of the final 10 points to take a 2-0 match lead (25-18).

Morningside continued to show fight into the third set, leading by as many as five (8-3, 10-5). However, with the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC)-leading service ace server Dexter behind the line, the Red Raiders would storm back with seven-straight points to take their first lead at 15-11 and would not look back. Northwestern would go on to take the final set, 25-20 and win their fourth-straight match.
