Red Raiders Sprint Past Dordt in Final Regular Season Home Match

Northwestern picks up 20th sweep of the season in front of a full Bultman Center

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The newly No. 1-ranked Northwestern College volleyball team (21-2, 12-2 GPAC) completes the season sweep of the rivals from Sioux Center with a straight sets win over the Dordt Defenders (4-16, 3-11 GPAC) in front of a full Bultman Center Wednesday night to conclude the home slate of the regular season.
After a strong start by the Defenders in the opening set (7-4), it was off to the races following an Emma Westphal (So., Hull, Iowa) kill, which sparked an 11-1 Red Raider run to take a commanding 18-10 lead. In the run, it was earmarked by three kills from Jazlin De Haan (Jr., Orange City, Iowa) and two from Alysen Dexter (Jr., Urbandale, Iowa), while Liv Reitsma (So., Papillion, Neb.) had a nice service run of five-straight points. Three-straight points by the Red Raiders would close out the set, as NWC prevailed 25-16.

Similar to the first set, it was Dordt who jumped out to a three-point lead early on (10-7). Yet another run of 7-0 for Northwestern would give them their first lead, which would be built up to five at 18-13 and forced a Defender time out. Five of the seven points came from Dordt attack errors, while De Haan recorded two kills. The time out proved to be too little, too late by Dordt as Northwestern would lead 19-15 when they would rattle off six of the last seven points of the set to take it by the same score as set one (25-16) and take a 2-0 match lead.

Northwestern dominated the final set, using small spurts of runs to jump out. The largest lead of the set – and match – came at the end of the set with a 13-point set victory (25-12). Leading 8-5, the Red Raiders went on a 9-2 run to take the air out of the Defenders and extend their lead to 17-7. Northwestern would then go on to take seven of the final nine points to end the match. The match would come to a fitting end as a block from the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) blocking leader Zavyr Metzger (So., Larchwood, Iowa) and Westphal would seal the deal in front of the home crowd.
