No. 1 Northwestern Tops Jamestown in Top-15 NAIA Battle

Junior Jazlin De Haan tallies her 1,000th career kill in the victory

JAMESTOWN, N.D. – The No. 1-ranked Northwestern College volleyball team (22-2, 13-2 GPAC) snaps a seven-match skid to the Jamestown Jimmies (21-8, 13-2 GPAC) to spoil their Senior Day in a highly competitive National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) top-15 clash. Junior Jazlin De Haan records her 1,000th career kill in the four-set victory.
The day started with a strong Red Raider presence. Jamestown took the first point of the match, but that was followed by eight-straight points by Northwestern to take an early 8-1 lead. The Jimmes would fight back to cut it to 9-6 but another four-point spurt would keep NWC ahead (13-6). The two teams would trade points as Jamestown worked to get back into it. Northwestern would hold onto a 20-14 lead when UJ pulled to within three. NWC would get it to set point at 24-19, and would prevail in the opening set 25-21 thanks to an Alysen Dexter (Jr., Urbandale, Iowa) kill.

Northwestern would continue to ride that set one victory into the second set, ultimately going on to take a 2-0 match lead inside Harold Newman Arena. The Jimmies would cling to a three-point lead multiple times early on in the set, but the top-ranked Red Raiders would prove why they are ranked No. 1 in the NAIA. Trailing 16-11, an eight-point run for the Red Raiders would give them their own three-point lead at 19-16. The two sides would find themselves deadlocked at 21-21 late. NWC would take the next two points, but Jamestown would even it up again with two-straight points of their own. The Red Raiders had the first set point opportunity, but it was spoiled by a Jimmie kill. However, two-straight kills for Northwestern from Jazlin De Haan (Jr., Orange City, Iowa) and Savonne Sterk (Jr., Lynden, Wash.) would see Northwestern take the 2-0 lead (26-24).

Jamestown would find a way to steal a set in front of the home crowd in set three on Senior Day to force a fourth set. The two teams would trade points early in the set. NWC would hold a 9-7 lead before the Jimmies rattled off six of the next seven points to take a 13-10 lead over the Red Raiders. Northwestern would keep it close, but Jamestown would continue to find points to keep the Raiders at arm's length. Northwestern would pull to within one (21-20), but the Jimmies would take the final four points of the set to prevail 25-20.

Northwestern would not be deterred as they would come out firing in the third set. Despite Jamestown holding a 7-4 lead early, a 7-1 Red Raider run would make it 11-8 NWC. Later, UJ would pull to within two points at 15-13 and NWC would have a 21-18 lead late. A flip of the end of the third set, the Red Raiders would rattle off four-straight points to prevail inside Harold Newman Arena, 3-1 (25-18 set three), in the final Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) game against the Jimmies in North Dakota.
