No. 3 Red Raiders Down Dakota Wesleyan for 20th Win of the Season

Jazlin De Haan tallies 10th double-double of the season in the sweep

MITCHELL, S.D. – The No. 3-ranked Northwestern College volleyball team (20-2, 11-2 GPAC) picked up their 20th win of the season with their second sweep of the season of the Dakota Wesleyan Tigers (17-13, 6-7 GPAC) inside the Christen Family Athletic Center. Jazlin De Haan picked up her 10th double-double of the season with match-highs in kills (17) and digs (21).
It was a battle inside the Christen Family Athletic Center on the campus of Dakota Wesleyan University in the first set as the Tigers looked to defend the home court. DWU led by as many as three multiple times in the set, but the Red Raiders would cut it to 14-13. Thanks to a pair of kills from Emma Westphal (So., Hull, Iowa) and Macay Van't Hul (Jr., Rock Valley, Iowa), Northwestern went on a 3-0 run to take their first lead at 16-14 and forcing Dakota Wesleyan to burn a time out. The Tigers would respond out of the break, taking back the lead at 19-17 as Northwestern called a time out to talk it over. The first block of the match came from Zavyr Metzger (So., Larchwood, Iowa) and made it 21-20 DWU, while a big kill from Jazlin De Haan (Jr., Orange City, Iowa) pulled NWC even in the set once again. Tied once again at 22-22, a huge ace from Emmy Wedgbury (Jr., Cedar Falls, Iowa) gave Northwestern the momentum needed to pull away in the opening set, 25-22.

The Red Raider defense began to flex their muscle in the second set, as the Red Raiders had recorded three blocks in the set by the time the Tigers called their second time out 15-5. Northwestern jumped out to a fast 9-2 lead thanks to a pair of kills from De Haan and Van't Hul. seven-straight points late in the set would not allow the Tigers to breathe as NWC jumped out to a 22-6 advantage, completely taking all momentum from the home crowd. The block party would continue later in the set, following the Tiger time outs, as the Red Raiders recorded six in the set to take the 2-0 match lead with a 25-8 set two victory.

Showing a bit more fight in the third set, the Tigers were not willing to fold after the second set. Similar to the first set, Dakota Wesleyan built up an early lead but Northwestern kept finding ways to fight back. All knotted up at 9-9, a beautifully placed serve from Alysen Dexter (Jr., Urbandale, Iowa) on the backline for an ace propelled the Red Raiders to build up a two-point advantage at 12-10. The two squads would continue going back and forth, but the 10th Red Raider block of the night would draw NWC to within one at 17-16. Dakota Wesleyan would hold a 20-17 lead as Northwestern took a time out. Out of the time out, two-straight points for the Red Raiders made it 21-19 as DWU took a time out. Massive back-to-back block from Van't Hul and Savonne Sterk (Jr., Lynden, Wash.) and Van't Hul and De Haan immediately out of the break, plus a Sterk kill, swung the momentum completely as NWC took a 22-21 lead. The Red Raiders would use a six-point run to storm back in the set and take the third set 25-21 for their sixth-straight sweep and win.
