No. 3 Northwestern Topples No. 1 Concordia in Straight Sets

NWC picks up their fifth win over a top-25 opponent and 18th sweep of the season

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The No. 3-ranked Northwestern College volleyball team (19-2, 10-2 GPAC) handed the No. 1-ranked Concordia University (Neb.) Bulldogs (17-1, 10-1 GPAC) their first loss of the season in straight sets on Senior Day for a top-5 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) showdown in front of a packed Bultman Center.  
The opening set the theme for the entire match as it would go to extra points before the thrilling set went in favor of the Red Raiders (26-24). The match began with both top-5 programs feeling each other out, both getting good swings and keeping balls up early on. The Bulldogs would hold a 11-10 lead early before Northwestern would take six of the next seven points to take a 15-12 lead would force a Concordia time out. NWC would hold a three-point lead (19-16) later in the set before Concordia took four-straight points to take a 20-19 lead and forced a Red Raider time out. Later, Concordia would be at set point (24-23) but a pair of kills from Jazlin De Haan (Jr., Orange City, Iowa) and Macay Van't Hul (Jr., Rock Valley, Iowa) would suddenly flip the script and give NWC set point. Following the final Bulldog time out, De Haan put the set away with a big swing, giving NWC the critical first set win.
 
The Red Raiders jumped out to a quick 7-3 advantage, forcing an early Bulldog time out. Northwestern would go on to build their lead up to six points (17-11) before the would pull within one point thanks to a 7-1 run (18-17). Following a Red Raider time out, Northwestern would take six of the next eight points to make it set point at 24-19. The Bulldogs would pick up one more point before Alysen Dexter (Jr., Urbandale, Iowa) gave the Red Raiders a demanding 2-0 lead with a kill to end the set.
 
Northwestern would come out swinging and riding the momentum of a 2-0 match lead in front of the home crowd in the third set, forcing Concordia to use both of their time outs with it being just 12-7 Red Raiders. Northwestern would jump out to their largest lead of the match at eight points (19-11). The Bulldogs would fight back taking five of the next six points and being with five points at 20-15, but Northwestern was able to rally off four-straight points to make it match point (24-15). The match would come to a satisfying finish as Zavyr Metzger (So., Larchwood, Iowa) and Savonne Sterk (Jr., Lynden, Wash.) would stuff the Bulldogs at the net and the Red Raider faithful erupting in celebration of the sweep of the top-ranked NAIA squad.
 
MATCH NOTES:
  • Northwestern tallied their 15th double-digit blocking match of the year, tallying 12 as a team.
  • NWC hit .180 to CUNE's .044 on the match, also holding a kill advantage (41-36).
  • The NAIA blocking leader Zavyr Metzger led the match with her six blocks (two solo), including a block to end the match.
  • Both Macay Van't Hul and Savonne Sterk both recorded five blocks; recording their 10th and seventh 5+-block match of the season, respectively.
  • Liv Reitsma recorded 20 assists in the match, her third-straight 20+ assist match.
  • Logan Miller added 11 assists in the victory.
  • Olivia Granstra had a match-high 23 digs in the sweep.
  • It's the 18th sweep of the season and fifth-straight (also fifth-straight win).
  • NWC improves to 6-2 in front of the home crowd and 5-2 in top-25 matchups.
  • The win over CUNE snaps a two-game skid to the Bulldogs and hands them their first loss of the 2023 campaign.

Up Next: The Red Raiders be off until next Friday, October 20 when they will travel to Mitchell, S.D. to complete the regular season series with the Dakota Wesleyan Tigers (17-11, 6-5 GPAC) for their only game of the week. First serve is slated for 7:30 p.m.
