Red Raiders Prep for a Full Slate of Basketball in Orange City

NWC looks to stay in the hunt for an opening-round hosting slot in GPAC tournament

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The No. 20-ranked Northwestern College women's basketball team (15-6, 10-5 GPAC) hit the hardwood on John and Ann Den Hartog floor inside the Bultman Center three times this week, marking a busy week of Red Raider hoops.

THE SHOOTAROUND
  • NAIA TOP-20: free throw percentage (3rd), FG% (5th), and Assists/Game (13th).
  • Emilee Danner took the team lead with her fourth double-double against Morningside, Schany is close behind with her three.
  • The Raiders held their 12th opponent of the season to under 40% shooting from the floor, improving to 12-0 in those games.
  • Northwestern has shot 50% or better from the floor in SIX games this season.
  • Maddie Jones set a new career-high with her nine assists in the game at Jamestown, while also leading the team with her 13 points and seven rebounds (season-high).  
  • Northwestern leads the GPAC in free throw percentage (77.8) and sits second in field goal percentage (47.1), opponents FG% (38.8), and blocks per game (2.9).
  • Three Raiders sit averaging double figures still this season entering the 2023 calendar year: Molly Schany (14.0), Maddie Jones (13.7), and Emilee Danner (10.0).
 
RECORD BREAKERS!
  • Northwestern could not miss in the first road win over Morningside since 2018, shooting a new single-game program record of 72.2% from the floor (39-for-54).
  • NWC separated themselves from the Mustangs in the third quarter, shooting a phenomenal 14-for-15 (93.3%).
  • It breaks the previous record of 67.7% (42-of-62) set against Missouri Baptist in the 2011-12 season. NWC won 103-60 on December 29, 2011.

IN GOOD COMPANY
  • 236 NAIA schools sponsor women's basketball…NWC sits top-45 in six different statistical categories.
  • The Raiders are top-5 in free throw percentage (3rd) and field goal percentage (5th).
  • NWC is top-45 in assists per game (13th), 3-point percentage (21st), rebounding margin (31st), and points per game (44th) this season.
MAKING THE FREE THROWS COUNT
  • Three Red Raiders are shooting 80+% from the free throw line this season (min. 25 att.).
  • NWC sits third in the NAIA in free throw percentage (77.8%), which also leads the GPAC.
  • Taylor VanderVelde leads the way at 88.9% (32-for-36).
  • Maddie Jones has attempted the most on the team, shooting at a clip of 84.8% (95-for-112), eclipsing the 100-attempt mark in the game against Concordia (Neb.) on Jan. 21.
  • Jones sits with the second most attempts in the GPAC, behind Doane's Hatcliff (194) and she sits third in the league in FT% (min. 50 attempts).
TOP-LEVEL TEAM DEFENSE
  • NWC holds opponents to a mere 38.8% field goal percentage and 60.8 points per game, which sits second and fourth in the GPAC, respectively.
  • 12 times this season, NWC has held opponents to sub-40% shooting from the floor and are a perfect 12-0 in those games.
SERIES HISTORY – DAKOTA WESLEYAN
  • This marks the first meeting of the season for the Red Raiders and Tigers, as it's the game postponed from December 15.
  • Northwestern holds the all-time series lead, 39-21 in the 60 all-time meetings.
  • Head coach Kristin Rotert looks for her first win over DWU (0-2).
SERIES HISTORY – COLLEGE OF SAINT MARY
  • NWC picked up a 20-point (67-47) road win at CSM to open league play back on November 16 in Omaha.
  • The Raiders hold the 19-4 all-time series lead against the Flames, winning the last 13 meetings in the series.
  • Rotert is 3-0 in her career against the Flames.
SERIES HISTORY – DOANE
  • The two teams met back in November in Crete, Neb. as the Red Raiders came home with the 81-70 win.
  • NWC has won the last seven meetings against the Tigers, holding the 36-23 series record against Doane.
  • Like CSM, Rotert is also 3-0 in her career against Doane.
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
  • DWU sits just a game behind the Red Raiders in sixth-place in the league standings entering their first meeting of the season with a 9-6 mark in GPAC play.
  • On the season, the Tigers sit 15-6 overall and enter on a top-25 road win over No. 18 Briar Cliff on Saturday (89-71).
  • DWU has an impressive 7-3 record on the road this season
  • Three Tigers enter the week averaging double digits per game, led by senior Jada Campbell who notches 14.6 points per game for head coach Jason Christensen.
  • The Tigers lead the GPAC with their 40.0 rebounds and 3.4 blocks per game.
SCOUTING THE FLAMES
  • The College of Saint Mary enters the month of February on a four-game skid, picking up just one win over Hastings in the month of January (1-7) and enters the month with a 5-17 (2-14 GPAC).
  • No one CSM player averages double digits per game, but the Flames are led by Madelyn Turner who sits at 9.3 points per game.
  • CSM sits last in the league with their 55.6 points per game, while only shooting at a clip of 35.6% from the floor on the season.
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
  • The Tigers enter the week in the final slot for the GPAC tournament, sitting in eighth-place with a 7-9 record in league play and hold a comfortable 3-game lead over Hastings.
  • Overall, the Tigers are 13-9 on the season and on a two-game win streak with wins over the College of Saint Mary (82-72) and Midland (69-41).
  • Doane still boasts the league's leading scorer in Mak Hatcliff, the only GPAC athlete to average 20+ points per game with her 22.7 mark; she also shoots a solid 36.0% from 3-point range.
  • Macy Holtz joins in the offensive barrage with 14.5 points per game herself.
Up Next: The Red Raiders will return for a busy week in Orange City, set to host three games next week, thanks to the rescheduled game against Dakota Wesleyan that was postponed on December 15.
