Northwestern Drops Home Contest to Dakota Wesleyan

Maddie Jones and Emilee Danner combine for 39 points

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The No. 20-ranked Northwestern College women's basketball team (15-7, 10-6 GPAC) fell to the Tigers of Dakota Wesleyan University (16-6, 10-6 GPAC) inside the Bultman Center Monday night, despite 39 combined points from Maddie Jones and Emilee Danner.

A rough start to the contest shooting put Northwestern in a 14-7 hole after the first quarter of play. As no Red Raider was able to score more than one bucket in the first 10 minutes of play.

Dakota Wesleyan would extend their lead to nine in the early part of the second quarter, despite the best efforts from Taylor VanderVelde (Sr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) who hit a 3-pointer to try and spark the Raider offense. The Tigers would lead by as many as 13 in the second quarter, but the Raiders were able to cut that lead down to eight – 33-25 – as the teams went to the locker room at the halftime break.

The Tigers would start the second half just as strong, pushing their lead up to as many as 18 points. Leading 50-32 with 3:46 left in the third quarter, a pair of free throws from Danner (Sr., Westside, Iowa) would spark a 7-0 run that would see Danner score five of the seven points. DWU would take an 13-point, 52-39, lead into the final quarter of play.

Northwestern would shoot 57.1% in the final quarter in an attempt to make a comeback, but DWU's 58.3% prevented that from happening as it proved to be too little, too late for the Red Raiders. Dakota Wesleyan would hold a double-digit lead with four minutes to play, as the Red Raiders would cut that lead down to four (68-64) with just over a minute to play. Ultimately, the Tigers would make their free throws and prevail on the road, 73-64.
