Home Winning Streak Snapped Against Dakota Wesleyan

Sterk with 20 points, Carlson adds 18

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – A stifling defensive effort from Dakota Wesleyan (12-11, 8-7 GPAC) put an end to (RV) Northwestern's (16-7, 9-6 GPAC) undefeated homeless record on Monday night, as the Tigers escaped with a 64-63 win in the Bultman Center.

Dakota Wesleyan made matters difficult early on as Koln Oppold got out to a hot start, helping his team to an 11-9 lead through the opening five minutes. Northwestern countered with a strong defensive effort, holding their opponent to just three points over the next nine minutes, while Zach LaFave (Jr., Elkhorn, Neb.) bookended an 11-3 run, making the score 23-14.

The Raiders led by as many as 11 points on a layup in the paint from Dillon Carlson (Sr., Ankeny, Iowa) with 3:08 before halftime. Dakota Wesleyan answered with a 9-2 run to finish the half, going 3-4 from three-point range over the stretch and trimming their halftime deficit to four points.

After regaining the lead for the first time in nearly 20 minutes of play, Kallan Herman scored in bunches for the Tigers, accumulating 20 second-half points on 6-6 shooting from beyond the arc. The Raiders shot better from the field in the second half, upping their efficiency by nearly nine percentage points, but the Tigers three-point shooting was the difference in the end.

With less than one minute to play and trailing 64-63, Grant DeMeulenaere (Sr., Altoona, Iowa) poked the ball away to give Northwestern the basketball with a chance to win. Out of a timeout with five seconds on the clock, Kaleb Booth (Fr., Carroll, Iowa) had a look from three that was blocked away by Dakota Wesleyan, giving the Tigers an important win on the road.
