Northwestern to Hit the Road This Week in GPAC Play

Molly Schany sits 10th in the GPAC in scoring entering the week

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The No. 15-ranked Northwestern College women's basketball team (14-5, 9-4 GPAC) look to get back on track this week with two Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) clashes on the road. The Raiders will battle Morningside in Sioux City on Wednesday, before hitting the road for Jamestown, N.D. on Saturday to battle the Jimmies.

THE SHOOTAROUND
  • NAIA TOP-20: free throw percentage (2nd), FG% (6th), and Assists/Game (T12th).
  • Molly Schany and Emilee Danner lead the team with their three double-doubles this season.
  • The Raiders held their 12th opponent of the season to under 40% shooting from the floor, improving to 12-0 in those games.
  • The 33-point win over Midland on Saturday was the third time this season NWC has had a 30+ point win, two of those coming against the Warriors.
  • Northwestern has shot 50% or better from the floor in SIX games this season.
  • Payton Beckman set a new career-high with 12 points in the win, shooting 5-for-7 from the floor.
  • Northwestern leads the GPAC in free throw percentage (78.7) and sits second in field goal percentage (47.2), opponents FG% (36.5), and blocks per game (3.2).
  • Three Raiders sit averaging double figures still this season entering the 2023 calendar year: Molly Schany (13.8), Maddie Jones (13.4), and Emilee Danner (10.1).
IN GOOD COMPANY
  • 236 NAIA schools sponsor women's basketball…NWC sits top-45 in seven different statistical categories.
  • The Raiders are top-5 in free throw percentage and top-10 in field goal percentage.
  • NWC is top-45 in assists per game (22nd), rebounding margin (25th), and 3-point percentage (33rd), and points per game (43rd) this season.
MAKING THE FREE THROWS COUNT
  • Three Red Raiders are shooting 80+% from the free throw line this season (min. 25 att.).
  • NWC sits second in the NAIA in free throw percentage (78.1%), which also leads the GPAC.
  • Taylor VanderVelde leads the way at 90.6% (29-for-32).
  • Maddie Jones has attempted the most on the team, shooting at a clip of 85.1% (86-for-101), eclipsing the 100-attempt mark in the game against Concordia (Neb.) on Jan. 21.
  • Jones sits with the second most attempts in the GPAC, behind Doane's Hatcliff (181) and she sits third in the league in FT% (min. 50 attempts).
TOP-LEVEL TEAM DEFENSE
  • NWC holds opponents to a mere 37.6% field goal percentage and 60.1 points per game, which sits third and second in the GPAC, respectively.
  • 12 times this season, NWC has held opponents to sub-40% shooting from the floor and are a perfect 12-0 in those games.
SERIES HISTORY – MORNINGSIDE
  • Northwestern and Morningside meet for the 81st time on Wednesday.
  • The Mustangs hold the 45-35 series lead.
  • Morningside has won eight of the last nine meetings, though the last two Raider losses have been by a combined three points.
  • NWC looks to win in Sioux City for the first time since the 2018-19 season, when the Raiders prevailed 91-66 on November 17, 2018.
SERIES HISTORY – JAMESTOWN
  • Northwestern and Jamestown meet for the 21st time in series history.
  • The Red Raiders hold a 14-6 all-time record against the Jimmies.
  • NWC won the first meeting back on January 6 (72-51) inside the Bultman Center.
  • Head coach Kristin Rotert sits 2-1 against UJ in her time in Orange City.
SCOUTING THE MUSTANGS
  • Morningside enters the game with a 13-7 (8-6 GPAC) record under24th-year head coach Jamie Sale.
  • The Mustangs took down Mount Marty on the road last time out on Saturday, led by Sophia Peppers (18 points) and McKenna Sims (12 points).
  • Sophia Peppers has been the star of the show for Morningside all season long, leading the team in scoring (12.8), rebounding (6.5), and assists (3.6) as the offense runs through her.
SCOUTING THE JIMMIES
  • Jamestown enters the game with a 15-5 record (10-4 GPAC) under fifth-year head coach Thad Sankey.
  • The Jimmies enter the week in third-place in the GPAC, just a half game ahead of the Red Raiders.
  • Hannah DeMars leads the offense with her 19.0 points per game, which sits second in the GPAC, she also leads the team in rebounding (10.3) as she averages a double-double so far this season.
  • Kia Tower also averages double digits this season, sitting at 14.4 points per game.
Up Next: The Red Raiders will return for a busy week in Orange City, set to host three games next week, thanks to the rescheduled game against Dakota Wesleyan that was postponed on December 15.
