Northwestern Stumbles at No. 21 Briar Cliff

Schany tallies her third double-double of the season

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – It was a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) top-25 showdown in the Newman Flanagan Center as the No. 15-ranked Northwestern College women's basketball team (14-4, 10-3 GPAC) as the No. 21-ranked Briar Cliff Chargers (14-5, 9-3 GPAC) defended their home floor with a 75-59 win. Junior Molly Schany recorded her third double-double of the season in the effort.

The two ranked teams traded baskets to open the contest as both teams began feeling each other out in the second meeting of 2022-23. The Raiders would end the opening quarter on an 11-5 spurt, taking a 15-13 advantage into the second quarter.

The second quarter proved to be a back and forth affair, as neither team could establish much of an advantage. The largest lead of the game, for any team, came in the second quarter with Northwestern leading 22-17 with just over six minutes left in the half, though Briar Cliff would respond with a bucket and a 3-pointer to quickly draw even once again. Northwestern ultimately outscored the Chargers 13-12, taking a three-points 25-28 lead into the locker room. Maddie Jones (Sr., Twin Lakes, Iowa) paced the Red Raiders offensively with nine first half points, while Hali Anderson (So., Saint Ansgar, Iowa) contributed eight points.

Briar Cliff came out on fire, scoring more in the third quarter (27) than they did in the first half (25). The Chargers led by as many as nine points (52-43) late in the period, but Northwestern used the final two minutes to cut into that deficit to only trail by three heading into the final frame, 52-49.

The Raiders got the first points of the fourth quarter thanks to a layup from Molly Schany (Jr., Emmetsburg, Iowa). Briar Cliff used their full court press to ignite a 6-0 spurt to build their lead back up to seven points at 58-51. A Red Raider time out settled the troops, as Anderson would stop the bleeding with a clutch three. Ultimately, a 10-0 run would lift the Chargers to the home court victory as the two teams split the regular season meetings.

GAME NOTES:
  • Molly Schany tallies her third double-double of the season, and 11th of her Red Raider career, with her 11 points and 11 rebounds.
