Red Raiders Split Season Series with Concordia

Emilee Danner records third double-double of the season

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The No. 15-ranked Northwestern College women's basketball team (14-5, 9-4 GPAC) split the regular season meeting with the Bulldogs from Concordia University (12-7, 10-5 GPAC), falling 65-55 inside the Bultman Center Saturday afternoon.

The visiting Bulldogs shot lights out all game long, but seemingly could not miss in the first quarter shooting 78.6% from the floor, erupting for 24 first quarter points. Northwestern hung close in the opening quarter, thanks to seven points from Emilee Danner (Sr., Westside, Iowa).

Concordia would jump out to an 11-5 advantage, before five straight points, all from Danner, knotted the game up at 11-11. With the Red Raiders leading 15-14 with two and a half minutes left in the quarter, it would be the Bulldogs who put up 10 of the last 13 points to take the 24-18 lead into the second quarter.

In the second quarter, Concordia would build up a lead of eight points a little past the midway point (32-24). Northwestern would cut that lead to three thanks to and-one from Danner and a pair of free throws from Maddie Jones (Sr., Twin Lakes, Iowa). However, the final four points would go to the Bulldogs as they took a seven-point 36-29 lead into the halftime break.

Early in the third quarter, the Bulldogs would lead by 11 at 44-33 but, once again, the Raiders showed some fight, cutting that lead down to just two, 48-46 CUNE, under a minute left in the third. But, ultimately, Concordia would score the first nine points of the fourth quarter to take a 57-46 lead and would keep the Raiders at bay the rest of the way. Concordia would leave Orange City with a 65-55 win, evening the regular season series with each visiting team stealing big wins.

GAME NOTES:
  • NWC was stymied to just 31.4% shooting, while the Bulldogs shot lights out at 50% on the afternoon.
  • As a team, the Red Raiders shot 81% from the charity strike (17-for-21), led by a perfect 6-for-6 from Maddie Jones.
  • The Raiders snagged 39 rebounds to Concordia's 24, holding a +15 margin in the category.
  • Senior Emilee Danner records her third double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
  • It marks the second-straight double-double for the Red Raiders, Molly Schany doing so against Briar Cliff.
  • Schany also records 11 rebounds and was one-point shy of back-to-back double-doubles (9 points), while Jones recorded a team-high 14 points.

Up Next: Northwestern will begin a two-game road trip, starting with a trip back out to Sioux City on Wednesday, January 25 to battle the Mustangs of Morningside University (13-7, 8-6 GPAC) with tip-off slated for 6:00 p.m. inside the Rosen Verdoorn Sports Center.
