Northwestern Surges Late; Downs Mount Marty 80-63

Danner records second double-double of the season, records career-high 13 rebounds

YANKTON, S.D. – It was a tale of two halves in South Dakota this evening for the No. 15-ranked Northwestern College women's basketball team (13-3, 8-2 GPAC), trailing at the half but erupting for 46 second half points to leave with a 17-point victory over Mount Marty University (5-13, 2-10 GPAC), 80-63, Wednesday evening. Senior Emilee Danner recorded her second double-double of the season.
"After a slow start, we responded well in the third quarter," noted head coach Kristin Rotert. "We played with a lot more toughness and focus, especially on the defensive end. We were able to get out and run in transition and get some easy baskets."

The Lancers would fight the No. 15-ranked team in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), trading buckets the entire first half, using the three-ball to stay within striking distance of the Raiders (6-for-9). Hali Anderson (So., Saint Ansgar, Iowa) would be the bulk of the Raider offense in the opening quarter, scoring seven of the team's 13 points as NWC held the slim 13-12 lead after a quarter of play.

Mount Marty would hold a five-point lead with just a minute to go in the first half, Northwestern would score the final four points of the quarter thanks to a lay-up and a pair of free throws from senior Maddie Jones (Twin Lakes, Iowa) as Mount Marty would take a one-point into the halftime break (35-34). Despite keeping it close, the Lancers largest lead would be the five-point advantage late in the second quarter.

Northwestern starts the third quarter by scoring the first six points, quickly erasing the one-point halftime deficit and leading 40-35. Anderson would give Northwestern their first double digit lead of the game with a 3-point basket with six and a half minutes left in the third (47-37). Mount Marty would make what would be their final push of the game, bringing the deficit down to as few as three points (48-45), but Northwestern would head to the final quarter with a 57-50 advantage.

"Defensively, we competed much harder and did a great job on the glass," noted Rotert. "Emilee (Danner) was a big difference maker on the boards all night and helped us hold Mount Marty to one shot."

The Red Raiders would continue their push into the fourth quarter, pushing their lead up to 19 points midway into the quarter at 72-53. Northwestern would outscore the Lancers 23-13 in the final quarter, part of their 46-point second half explosion to run away with the contest.

"We shared the ball well all game and did a good job finding post touches in the second half," concluded Rotert.
