Big First Quarter Propels No. 15 Red Raiders Past Midland

Northwestern held fourth opponent of the season to under 30% shooting

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The No. 15-ranked Northwestern College women's basketball team (14-3, 9-2 GPAC) used a dominant first quarter to run past the Midland University Warriors (3-14, 1-11 GPAC), 84-51, for the second time this season, as the Raiders 33-point victory is the third-largest margin of victory on the season. Freshman Payton Beckman records a new career-high with 12 points.
"Great team win. We shared the ball really well on the offensive end of the floor and created a lot of opportunities in transition," noted head coach Kristin Rotert. "Our bench provided a big spark and made an impact on both ends."

Northwestern dominated the game from start to finish, putting up 23 first quarter points as Hannah Nerem (Sr., Edgerton, Minn.) and Molly Schany (Jr., Emmetsburg, Iowa) dominated the paint, combining for 11 of the Raiders' first quarter points. The Red Raiders led 23-7 after the first quarter, thanks to a 14-3 run spanning nearly six minutes of game action.

Midland picked up the scoring in the second quarter, the only period the Warriors managed to outscore Northwestern, but was unable to cut into the deficit. An early 6-0 run saw the Raiders continue to start fast and push their lead up to 19 points (29-10), and eventually would take a 15-point 36-21 lead into the locker room at the halftime break.

Midland never got within 15 points in the second half, as Northwestern pushed their lead up to 20+ points for the first time with a Taylor VanderVelde (Sr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) three-pointer with three and a half minutes left in the third quarter.

Northwestern blew the game wide open in the final quarter thanks to a 16-2 run to finish the game, as the Raiders defeated the Midland Warriors by 30+ points for the second time this season.
