No. 7 NWC Picks Up Big GPAC Road Win Against No. 18 CSM

Raiders put down 10 blocks and nine service aces in the victory

OMAHA, Neb. – The No. 7-ranked Northwestern College volleyball team (13-4, 4-3 GPAC) picked up a massive top-20 road win, downing No. 18-ranked College of Saint Mary (13-4, 3-4 GPAC) in straight sets inside the Lied Fitness Center, picking up their fifth top-25 win of the season Friday night.

"I thought we won the serving and passing battle, while also blocking well and playing good team defense," noted head coach Kyle Van Den Bosch. "We attacked with good velocity on the ball."

An intense first set set the tone of the first two sets, but it was all Red Raiders come the third and final set on the campus of the College of Saint Mary. The Red Raiders held the Flames to a .177 hitting percentage on the match with 10 team blocks.

Jazlin De Haan (So., Orange City, Iowa) was the hot hand in the opening set, putting down seven kills on a .375 hitting percentage. Macay Van't Hul (So., Rock Valley, Iowa) contributed three kills in the set. Being no surprise, De Haan put down the set-winning kill after a six-point run for the Flames for the Raiders to take set one, 25-23.

The College of Saint Mary takes the first three points of set two, but a solo block from Savonne Sterk (So., Lynden, Wash.) ignites the Red Raiders as they quickly even the match at 3-3. Another fierce battle would ensure in the second set between the two top-20 teams, as CSM would use a five-point swing to take a 9-4 lead and force a Red Raider time out. Though, NWC would respond and end up hitting .282 in the second set, ultimately prevailing 26-24.

Northwestern used the momentum gained at the end of the second set to storm out to a 5-0 lead inside the Lied Fitness Center, forcing a Flames time out. Out of the time out, the Raiders took three of the next four points, extending their lead to 8-1. A blood jersey time out allowed the Raider bench and Raider faithful in attendance to get extremely loud. The Flames would mount a late comeback attempt, getting within six points (20-14), but the Raiders were able to put away the final set 25-17. Northwestern hit a set-high .282 in the second set, ultimately prevailing 26-24. The story of the third set wound of being the Raiders swinging red hot (.273 pct.) and the Flames going ice cold (.117 pct.).
