Rocket League Ties for Fifth at Collegiate Esports Invitational

MANKATO, Minn. – The Northwestern Rocket League team competed at the Rockstar Energy Collegiate Esports Invitational last Saturday, hosted by Minnesota State University-Mankato. The Raiders brought two teams to the tournament, with the varsity squad finishing tied for fifth among 14 teams and the junior varsity team compiling a 1-2 record.

In the double elimination tournament, Northwestern varsity entered as the seventh seed, opening with a 2-0 victory over No. 10 MSU-Mankato. The next match saw the Raiders fall to a top-five opponent in No. 2 Davenport (Mich.).

The two participating Northwestern teams came together in round two of the elimination bracket, with the varsity team victorious in two games, eliminating the junior varsity group from the tournament.

The varsity Raiders needed a comeback attempt in round three against Bethany Lutheran (Minn.) after dropping the first game and then winning 2-1 thanks to an overtime goal by senior captain Brady Wynia (Orange City, Iowa). Northwestern was ultimately eliminated on a 2-0 decision against Wayne State (Neb.) after falling in overtime in game one.

"With our regular season looming, this tournament was a perfect way for us to kick off the year," commented Northwestern Director of Esports Cole Prescott. "Both our varsity and JV Rocket League squads got to feel what it's like to secure solid wins and take hard losses. We have a pretty young squad this year, so getting in a good burst of game day experience right out of the gate like this will serve us well in the coming weeks."
