Northwestern Drops First Game of Pizza Ranch Classic

Story Links

ORANGE CITY, Iowa  – On an uncharacteristically warm September day, the offense was leading the action Friday evening, as the Ottawa (Kan.) (1-1-1, 0-0-0 KCAC) defeated the No. 25 Northwestern (0-3-0, 0-0-0 GPAC) Red Raiders in non-conference play.

The Raiders had opportunities early on as a header attempt 20 minutes in by James Bolger (Boyle, Republic of Ireland) was stopped in goal by Gage Powers of Ottawa.

The Braves were first to strike, taking a 1-0 advantage when Francisco Ferrer found the back of the net on the corner kick assist from Jonathan Rawayo. However, opportunities were difficult to come by for the rest of the half as a combined three shot attempts were had for both teams in the closing 17 minutes.

The second half got out to a quick start as the Raiders tied the game on a Niklas Fitter (Sankt Augustin, Germany) goal, his first of the 2022 season. Ottawa answered just minutes later to regain the lead, when Slobodan Novicevic made the score 2-1 after taking a shot from the back of the penalty area.

At the 70' mark, Northwestern tied the score at 2-2 when Menkem Mehri (Worthington, Minn.) centered the ball, which deflected off of a teammate's back and into the back of the net. It was his first goal of the year.

Ottawa took a late lead at the 76' mark and then secured the win with a goal at 81 by Bence Molnar, his fifth of the season.
