Raiders Drop Top-20 Road Clash at Dakota Wesleyan

Bekah Horstman reaches 500 career kills milestone

MITCHELL, S.D. – The No. 7-ranked Northwestern College volleyball team (10-3, 2-2 GPAC) dropped a hard fought four set Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) match (25-22, 22-25, 19-25, 24-26) at No. 18 Dakota Wesleyan Wednesday evening.

In the second set, senior Bekah Horstman (Sr., Pella, Iowa) picked up her fifth block of the match which puts her in exclusive company in Red Raider volleyball history. The block marked her 500th career block in the red and white, becoming just the third Red Raider to achieve the feat.

The Raiders came out swinging in the first set. Northwestern took a 6-0 lead right off the bat, but a DWU time out would spark a 4-0 run for the home team. Another Raider spurt of five-straight points would allow Northwestern to take the 11-4 lead. Despite a comeback and tying it up at 14-14, DWU never held a lead in the opening set as Northwestern would take the 25-22 win.

Dakota Wesleyan would respond, with the help of the home crowd, and take the second set by the same score. Northwestern led 15-14 in the set, but a five-point swing for the Tigers allowed the home team fans to get into it and carry DWU to the set victory, tying the match at 1-1.

The momentum would remain with Dakota Wesleyan into the third set. Despite trailing 20-9, the Raiders made a furious comeback attempt that fell just short. A 6-1 Raider run cut it to 21-15, but the home court advantage allowed the Tigers to prevail 25-19.

Northwestern came out ready to battle in the fourth set, leading 12-7 early on. A .412 hitting percentage, the best set percentage of the night, kept the Raiders in it but a late Tiger run would seal the deal. Though the set would go extra points, Northwestern would fall 26-24 and drop the match 3-1.

MATCH NOTES:
  • Bekah Horstman became the third Red Raider to reach the 500-career block milestone tonight with her match-high six blocks.
  • Tonight marked the sixth match of the season against a top-25 team.
  • The two evenly-matched squads hit nearly identical as NWC hit .209 to DWU's .207.

  • Alysen Dexter had a match-high 21 kills, the only athlete to notch 20+ in the match; it marks her second match of the season with 20+ kills.

  • Olivia Granstra had a match-high 22 digs; her sixth 20+ dig match of the season.
