No. 8 Raiders Sweeps Day Two; Leaves California 3-1

NWC opens GPAC play on Wednesday at Morningisde

FULLERTON, Calif. – The No. 8-ranked Northwestern College women's volleyball team (2-1, 0-0 GPAC) had no problems today in the second day of the Hope International University (HIU) tournament, winning both matches in straight sets to leave California 3-1 on the weekend. The Raiders topped (RV) Vanguard (25-16, 25-14, 25-16) and hosts Hope International (25-13, 25-17, 25-18).

MATCH 1: (8) NWC 3, (RV) Vanguard 0
Northwestern opened the final day of the tournament using 17 team services aces to down (RV) Vanguard (Calif.) in straight sets, as both Jadeyn Schutt (Sr., Orange City) and Alysen Dexter (So., Urbandale, Iowa) both tallied five. When Vanguard was able to put an attack together, the Raiders sent eight straight to the floor via the block. Macay Van't Hul (Jr., Rock Valley, Iowa) notched a team-high five blocks.

Vanguard would storm out to a 6-2 first set lead, but a five-point run would allow Northwestern to take their first lead (7-6) as Schutt notched two aces and Dexter putting down two big swings. An 8-2 run soon after opened the Raider lead to 15-9, as the Raiders would keep the momentum to close out the set 25-16.

Set two was back and forth early, but with a Raider 10-8 advantage the team used a 6-0 run to take a 16-8 lead. The Raiders would use an 8-2 run to close out the set, winning it 25-14 and taking the 2-0 lead.

The third set was more Northwestern, as a 7-0 run killed Vanguard momentum at the time. Though the Lions would use a 5-0 run to pull within two (18-16 NWC), the Raiders responded with seven-straight to close out the set and the match.

MATCH NOTES
MATCH 2: (8) NWC 3, Hope International 0
The Raiders wasted no time in the final match of the trip out west, jumping out to an early 4-0 first set lead. Another spurt of five, Northwestern extended their lead up to 12-6 thanks to two service aces from Schutt. Hindered by attack errors, NWC would keep the Royals at arm's length the rest of the match, running away with the opening set 25-13.

The second set was a set of runs for both sides. Combined, the two teams would have seven runs of 4+ points. Northwestern would use two set-high five-point runs to take control, including the final run to close out the set 25-17.

The final set proved to be more dominance from the Red Raiders, jumping out to a quick 11-4 advantage. Another five-point spurt, highlighted by two service aces from Jazlin De Haan (So., Orange City, Iowa), forced a HIU time out. Using a 7-2 run, with two kills from freshman Emma Westphal (Hull, Iowa), to take a 20-11 lead Northwestern would close out the set and take the match in straight sets to end the California trip.
