Raiders Pick Up Second Win in Missouri

COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Northwestern College women's soccer team (1-0-0, 0-0-0 GPAC) finished the trip down to Missouri with an explosive offensive performance, netting five goals en route to a 5-3 win over the Stephens College Stars (0-2-0, 0-0-0 AMC) to begin the season 2-0 for the first time since 2011. Alexa Johnson remains hot for the Red Raiders, bringing her Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC)-leading goal total to four.
"It took us a while to get our footing in this game. We came out very frantic and allowed them to break us down easily," noted head coach Shannon Andringa. "The girls responded well and the second half we came out much more focused and were able to posses and control the game."

Right out of the gates in the first half, the two teams combined for four goals. Johnson (Fr., Spencer, Iowa) started the scoring early in the match, before Stephens found the back of the net to draw even at 1-1. Both teams would find the back of the net once more in the first half, as the halftime score fell at 2-2. Senior Julie Dunlap (Sr., Des Moines, Iowa) netted the second Raider goal. Abby Noonan (Jr., Carlisle, Iowa) found herself in the thick of the first half scoring, assisting both goals.

The Raiders erupted for three second half goals to take complete control of the contest. Annika Quamen (Fr., Tea, S.D.) netted her first-career collegiate goal to make it 3-2. Johnson would find the back of the net for the second time in the match, which proved to be the game-winning tally for the Red Raiders. Madi Manary (So., Vancouver, Wash.) would get into the scoring action for the fourth Red Raider score. Finally, Dunlap would join Johnson in netting her second goal, to make it 5-3.

"Overall, the trip (to Missouri) was a great start to the season," concluded Andringa. "We have a lot to learn and clean up before we start GPAC play, but each day the girls are getting better. I'm excited to see where this group will end up this year!"

MATCH NOTES:
  • Today marks the second-straight match that freshman Alexa Johnson has netted multiple goals in as many career contests.
  • Three different Raiders find the back of the net in the victory.
