No. 8 Raiders Dominant in Sweep of No. 25 Ottawa to Open 2022

Bekah Horstman moves into ninth-place in program history in solo blocks

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The Northwestern College women's volleyball team (1-0, 0-0 GPAC) got off to a hot start in 2022 with a straight sets victory over No. 25 Ottawa University (0-1, 0-0 KCAC) inside the Bultman Center, behind a team-high 12 kills from transfer outside hitter Jazlin De Haan. The Raiders notched 41 kills behind a solid .299 hitting percentage.
 
The first set saw a back and forth affair as the two top-25 teams felt each other out. Though it was back and forth, neither team led by more than four in the set, which that largest margin came to conclude the set (25-21). Ottawa never led by more than two as Northwestern found ways to keep them at bay. With NWC trailing 19-17 late in the set, a timeout from Coach Van Dan Bosch settled the troops. Northwestern would tally eight of the next ten points to secure the opening set victory.
 
"I thought we got more relaxed and found our groove the longer the game went on. Our defense was good throughout the night and I thought Jaz scored in a variety of ways to lead us in kills," noted head coach Kyle Van Den Bosch. "We have a variety of attackers that could lead us this year and tonight it was Jaz."
 
The Raiders quickly found their grove in the second set, putting the Braves on their heels as the Raiders hit a solid .294 to take the commanding 2-0 match lead. Northwestern jumped out to an early 9-3 lead, but the Braves would fight back with three-straight points to make it 9-6. A De Haan kill would make it 10-6 and start a five-point Raider spurt to force an Ottawa timeout with NWC leading 14-6. In that spurt, senior middle hitter Bekah Horstman (Sr., Pella, Iowa/Pella Christian) notched two kills, plus the kill out of the timeout to give the Raiders their largest lead up to that point at 15-6. Northwestern would go on to finish the set thanks to three De Haan kills in those final ten Raider points, taking the set 25-14.
 
The third set saw more complete dominance from the Red Raiders, as the team hit a blistering .400 on the set. Ottawa would take a four-point swing to take their lone lead early in the set (8-7). Tied at 11-11, another Horstman kill would spark another major run for the Red Raiders. A 6-0 run would put the set – and match – out of reach of the visiting Braves as the Raiders would lead it 17-11. 2021 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Freshman of the Year Alysen Dexter (So., Urbandale, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) put away three of the last five Raider points to close out the 25-14 to close out the third set and pick up the top-25 victory in front of the Red Raider faithful.
 
With her two solo blocks tonight, senior Bekah Horstman now sits ninth in program history for career solo blocks. Van Den Bosch noted, "Bekah is a versatile player that we are looking to have another great year for us!"
 
Northwestern outperformed the Braves in every category including a 21-kill advantage on the night (41-20), a 19-assist advantage (37-18), and a five-block advantage (7-2).

Up Next: The Raiders will head out west for the Hope International University (HIU) Tournament this weekend out in Fullerton, Calif. They will open the tournament with two matches on Friday, August 26 beginning with Saint Katherine (Calif.), followed by a top-10 clash with No. 7-ranked Corban (Ore.).
