Volleyball Splits Day One at Hope International Tournament

FULLERTON, Calif. – The No. 8-ranked Northwestern College women's volleyball team (2-1, 0-0 GPAC) split on the opening day of the Hope International University tournament, taking down Saint Katherine (Calif.) Firebirds (3-0) before falling to No. 7-ranked Corban (Ore.) Warriors (3-1) in the nightcap.

MATCH 1: (8) NWC 3, St. Katherine 0

The first set was another battle, both teams battling early. The Firebirds held a 14-13 advantage midway through the set before a 5-0 Raider run gave the Raiders the momentum needed to close out the first set.

The third set was complete dominance as Northwestern commanded the set 25-5. The Raiders picked up the first 10 of the set's 11 points, thanks to six attack errors from Saint Katherine. With a 10-2 advantage, NWC used an 11-1 run to make it 21-3. Two of the final three points in the set were scored via the service ace.

The Red Raiders controlled the net all night long, recording an early-season high of nine blocks in the straight-set victory. Both Katie Peters (Sr., Le Mars, Iowa) and Bekah Horstman (Sr., Pella, Iowa) had five block assists in the match. When not dominating at the net, the Raider servers put down 10 service aces thanks to four from Alysen Dexter (So., Urbandale, Iowa) and three from Emmy Wedgbury (So., Cedar Falls, Iowa).

MATCH NOTES
  • Bekah Horstman hit a phenomenal .615 with nine kills on 13 attempts.
  • For the second straight match, Jazlin De Haan led the team in kills (12).
  • The Raiders were stellar with their serves as the team had 10 service aces.
  • Alysen Dexter had her serve working in the first match, notching four service aces.
  • Liv Reitsma led the Raiders with 16 assists, Emily Strasser had a team-high eight digs.

MATCH 2: (7) Corban 3, (8) NWC 1

After a lengthy delay from the originally slated first serve, the Raiders hit the court for a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) top-10 clash in the nightcap of the first day at the HIU Tournament. Corban would take the first set in a tightly contested opening set, taking the set 25-22.

Northwestern would respond with a stellar .367 hitting percentage in the second set, taking set two, 25-23 to draw even in the match. Holding a 7-5 lead early in the set, Corban went on a 5-0 run to take a 10-7 lead. However, the Raiders would respond with a larger 6-0 spurt down 20-13 to pull within one (20-19). Shortly after, another four-point spurt gave Northwestern the 23-21 lead as they would close it out thanks to an Dexter kill.

The third set would prove to be just as good, with both teams battling in another very close match but would fall the way of the warriors (25-23). Corban would take the fourth – and final set – by the score of 25-16 to take the match 3-1.

MATCH NOTES
  • The team comparison was fairly equal between the two top-10 ranked teams for the match.
  • NWC held the edge in team blocks, 10-7.
  • Jazlin De Haan (13) and Bekah Horstman (12) both notched double-digit kills.
  • It marks the first time this season two Raiders have had double-digit kills in a match.
  • The block party continued with the ten team blocks, led by Macay Van't Hul with five.
  • For the second straight match, freshman Liv Reitsma led the team in assists (20).
  • Olivia Granstra led the team in digs (20) for the second time this season.
