FREMONT, Neb. – The Northwestern College men's tennis team (8-4, 0-1 GPAC) opened up Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) play with a tough Midland University (13-3, 2-0 GPAC) squad, dropping the match 0-7.
Head coach
Monte Tilgner commented, "Although we didn't win any matches, this was by far the best we've played against Midland. They are so good and so consistent but we were right there. The guys are doing a great job in practice and we're getting better every day."
The Warriors swept the doubles point, taking all three matches. The Raiders were able to win four games between the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. The No. 3 spot saw
Jack Roisum (So., Rapid City, S.D.) and
Noah Roisum (So., Rapid City, S.D.) battle, but eventually fall 4-6.
Coach Tilgner added, "Brian, David, and Juan each really pushed their opponents in their sets, and played at a very high level. Collin, Jack, and Noah also played some of their best tennis so that was great to see."
Brian VandenBerg (Jr., Mason City, Iowa) was able to take six games at the No. 1 spot but fell 4-6, 2-6.
David Bomgaars (Fr., Aurora, Colo.) dropped his first set 1-6 but battled in his second set, taking five games but falling 5-7.
Juan Mackrey (Sr., Balcare, Argentina) also won a handful of games in a competitive match in the No. 3 spot.
