No. 16 NWC Takes on Two Top-25 Teams in League Play

Raiders play at No. 5 Dordt and host No. 25 Morningside

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The Northwestern College women's basketball team (10-0, 5-0 GPAC) has a pair of National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) top-25 games this week. The Raiders start the week with a trip to Sioux Center to battle arch-rival and No. 5-ranked Dordt University (10-0, 5-0 GPAC). On Saturday, NWC will host No. 25-ranked Morningside (4-4, 2-3 GPAC) inside the Bultman Center.

THE SHOOTAROUND
  • NAIA TOP-20: FG% (4th), Assists/Game (7th), free throw percentage (12th), and points per game (13th).
  • Head coach Kristin Rotert has run it back…NWC has started the season 10-0 both seasons under her leadership.
  • Northwestern went undefeated under Rotert for the second-straight season, now sitting 17-0 under her.
  • Northwestern and Dordt still remain the only two teams unbeaten in the GPAC, as they are the only two teams to average 80+ points per game.
  • Four Raiders sit averaging double figures through the first four games of the season: Maddie Jones (15.8), Molly Schany (15.4), Emilee Danner (12.6), and Taylor VanderVelde (10.4).
  • Taylor VanderVelde Danner continues to lead the GPAC in blocks (16) and blocks per game (1.6), as she needs just five blocks to record 100+ in her career to become the ninth Red Raider to do so.
HOT START TO GPAC PLAY
  • NWC heads to Sioux Center with a 5-0 record in GPAC play.
  • It's the best start to conference play since the 2013-14 season under Chris Yaw when they Raiders started 11-0.
OFF TO A FAST START
  • Maddie Jones is keeping her foot on the gas pedal, entering the week leading the team in scoring (15.8ppg).
  • She's led the team in assists in six of the ten games this season from her point guard position, with a career-high eight against Chadron State and averages 4.8 assists per game.
  • She leads the team in assists (48) and steals (27).
  • She was named the Week 3 GPAC Player of the Week
GETTING TO THE LINE
  • Northwestern leads the GPAC with their 216 free throw attempts this season.
  • They've made a league-high 164 free throws, the only team in the GPAC to make 150+ so far.
  • The team's 75.9% from the charity strike leads in the GPAC and sits 12th in the NAIA.
  • Senior Maddie Jones leads the team in free throw percentage (min. 25 att.) at 81.8% (54-of-66), shooting the most on the team so far this season.
SERIES HISTORY – DORDT
  • The Raiders and Defenders are meeting for the 90th time on Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day.
  • Northwestern leads the all-time series 70-19.
  • The Raiders have won nine of the last 11 meetings in the series.
SERIES HISTORY – MORNINGSIDE
  • The two teams are meeting for the 80th time on Saturday.
  • Morningside leads the all-time series 44-35, as the Mustangs have won seven of the last eight meetings.
  • Northwestern snapped a then five-game skid to the Mustangs with a 78-77 win in Orange City last season in Rotert's first meeting against them.
  • The two teams last met in the Semifinals of the GPAC tournament last season, which saw the Mustangs prevail by one-point (73-72).
SCOUTING THE DEFENDERS
  • Dordt enters with an identical record (10-0, 5-0 GPAC) and are ranked No. 5 in the NAIA under fifth-year head coach Bill Harmsen.
  • The Defenders are led by three double-digit scorers in Karly Gustafson (18.9), Bailey Beckman (17.8), and Janie Schoonhoven (11.8).
SCOUTING THE MUSTANGS
  • Morningside started the season highly ranked, but a slow start has seen them drop to No 25 in the latest NAIA Coaches' Poll.
  • The Mustangs enter with a 4-4 overall record and a 2-3 mark in league play under 24th-year head coach Jamie Sale.
  • They average 77.1 points per game led by junior forward Chloe Lofstrom who averages 14.6 points per game in just over 26 minutes per game.
  • Lofstrom was also named the Week 2 GPAC Player of the Week.
Up Next: Northwestern will have just one game next week when they welcome No. 11-ranked Dakota Wesleyan University inside the Bultman Center for a 6:0 p.m. tip-off.
