No. 16 Red Raiders Use Hot Shooting in Second Half to Down Concordia

Northwestern snaps an 11-game losing streak to the Bulldogs in Seward

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The No. 16-ranked Northwestern College women's basketball team (10-0, 5-0 GPAC) has started the season 10-0 for the second-straight season, and snapped an 11-game losing streak in Seward dating back to 2013, with a 72-56 win over the Concordia (Neb.) Bulldogs (4-4, 2-4 GPAC) Saturday afternoon.

"We struggled to find a pace and flow on the offensive end of the floor in the second quarter and had some poor turnovers against the Concordia pressure," noted head coach Kristin Rotert. "We responded well in the second half and were tremendous on the defensive end of the floor. We did a great job dominating the boards and holding Concordia to one shot."

Northwestern and Concordia found themselves deadlocked at 14-14 at the end of the first quarter, after the Raiders jumped out to a 7-2 early lead. Maddie Jones (Sr., Twin Lakes, Iowa) began what would become another career day with five points in the first 10 minutes, as did fellow senior Emilee Danner (Westside, Iowa).

Concordia used a 9-2 run to start the second quarter, thanks to a pair of three pointers in back-to-back possessions to open a 23-16 lead. Northwestern would fight back, pulling to within one at 28-27 with two minutes remaining in the half. The Bulldogs would score six of the last seven points of the quarter to take a 34-28 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Raiders shot an impressive 58.3% (14-for-24) from the floor in the second half to pull away from the Bulldogs and erase the six-point halftime deficit, while also shooting 87.5% (14-for-16) from the charity strike in the half. Northwestern held the Bulldogs to just 10 points in the third quarter, while putting 21 on the board themselves. Only four Raiders would score in the third, led by Jones with seven bringing her total to 15 heading into the fourth.

It would be all Raiders in the final quarter, putting up 20+ points for the second-straight quarter with 23. It was Jones again with seven to lead the Raiders, allowing her to set a new career high with 22 points. In that final frame, Northwestern was seven-of-eight from the free throw line, helping them to seal the 18-point win on the road, the first in Seward since February 23, 2013 in the 2012-13 season.

"Offensively, we handled their press much better in the third quarter and were able to find a rhythm on the offensive end of the floor," concluded Rotert. "Maddie (Jones) hit some big three's and finished some drives in the third quarter to spark our run. Emilee (Danner) did a great job of finding space in the paint against Concordia's zone and finishing around the rim."
