Red Raiders Edged by No. 5 Dordt in Road Clash

Northwestern went 18-for-19 from the free throw line

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – The No. 16-ranked Northwestern College women's basketball team (10-1 5-1 GPAC) suffered their first loss of the season on the road against No. 5-ranked Dordt University (11-0, 6-0 GPAC) in a top-20 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) clash inside DeWitt Gymnasium.

It was the Defenders who got off to a fast start in front of their home crowd, using a 14-2 run out of the gates to take control of the contest early. Northwestern would attempt to chip away at it, but would trail by 12 at the end of the first quarter, 18-6. Molly Schany (Jr., Emmetsburg, Iowa) would tally four of those points at the free throw line for the Red Raiders.

Northwestern would double their offensive output in the second quarter to chip into the Dordt lead. The Raiders would cut the lead down to 10 at 28-18 halfway through the period and with the first three of the game from Taylor VanderVelde (Sr., Sioux Falls, S.D.), the Raiders cut it to single digits at seven points with under a minute left in the half at 30-23. Dordt would hit a layup in the final possession of the half to take the 32-23 lead into the locker room.

At the halftime break, Schany led the team with 10 points and Emilee Danner (Sr., Westside, Iowa) brought down five rebounds.

Maddie Jones (Sr., Twin Lakes, Iowa) would get the Raiders on the board for the first time in the second half with a hard drive to her left, resulting in an and-one opportunity. The Defenders would push their lead back up to double digits with a three with seven minutes left in the third. Dordt rode the wave of momentum created by a 10-0 run and the energy from the home crowd to jump out to a 44-26 lead, leading to a Northwestern time out.

Once again, Northwestern would pull within single digits with a Maren Nerem (So., Edgerton, Minn.) layup, forcing Dordt to use a time out. Jones would be instrumental in the Raiders fighting their way back into the game, finding ways to score and get to the free throw line, as the Raiders would trail by 11 heading to the fourth quarter.

Schany would cut the Defender lead back down to six points with an and-one of her own (54-48). The game would remain between eight and ten points most of the quarter with Dordt holding off the Red Raider attempts to claw back late. The Defenders would go on to prevail 65-55 inside DeWitt Gymnasium.
