Northwestern Comes Up Just Short Against Morningside

Sophomore Maren Nerem scores a career-high 19 in the contest

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The No. 16-ranked Northwestern College women's basketball team (10-2 5-2 GPAC) dropped a tough 66-64 loss to No. 25-ranked Morningside University (5-5, 3-4 GPAC) inside the Bultman Center on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Maren Nerem erupts for a new career-high of 19 points.

In the third quarter, junior Molly Schany (Emmetsburg, Iowa) would tally her 1,000th career point with a layup for her seventh point of the contest. She becomes the second Red Raider to accomplish the career milestone this season (Taylor VanderVelde) and the 37th Red Raider in program history to do so.

"Tremendous accomplishment for a fantastic young woman," said head coach Kristin Rotert. "Happy for Molly and proud of all the work she has put in to get to this point."

Morningside got on the board first and would lead for the entirety of the first half, leading by as much as 10 points. Schany got the first four Red Raider points in pursuit of her 1,000th career point. Maren Nerem (So., Edgerton, Minn.) was the first Raider to double digits with 10 points with three minutes left in the half, finishing with 13 in the first half thanks to a 2-for-3 mark from deep. It was another big first half for Emilee Danner (Sr., Westside, Iowa) on the boards, picking up five.

After a cold start from both teams to start the second half, coming off the bench midway through the third quarter, Payton Beckman (Fr., Panora, Iowa) would nail a big three-pointer to cut the Mustang lead down to one (42-41), forcing a Morningside time out. A couple minutes later, Morningside left Beckman wide open who would knock down another three to tie the game.

Hali Anderson (So., Saint Ansgar, Iowa) would give Northwestern their first lead of the game at 49-48, right after Schany picked up her 1,000th career point. The two teams would go back and forth for the rest of the quarter as Morningside would take the 54-49 lead with a 6-0 going into the fourth.

Nerem continued her career day and gives Northwestern just their second lead of the game at 60-58 with five minutes to play in the contest, highlighting a 10-0 Red Raider run. Morningside would take another time out trailing 62-60 with 3:30 remaining which would result in a game-tying bucket. Morningside would respond, taking a 66-62 lead with a minute and a half remaining. Down two and with the ball in the final possession, a game-winning three from Danner came up just short as Morningside would prevail 66-64.
