Big Third Quarter Downs Bluejays to Wrap Up Kansas Trip

Schany paces NWC with 19 points and eight rebounds

HILLSBORO, Kan. – The (RV) Northwestern College women's basketball team (2-0, 0-0 GPAC) dominates their second-straight game against Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) to open the new season, downing the (RV) Tabor College Bluejays (0-3, 0-0 KCAC) to finish the season-opening trip down south.
"It's great to go home with two road wins," said head coach Kristin Rotert. "I'm really proud of the toughness we showed tonight, especially on the defensive end of the floor."

The Red Raiders defense was stifling in the first three quarters, as Tabor could not muster more than nine points in a quarter in the three periods. Northwestern led for over 90% of the game, with Tabor's last lead being 9-8 late in the first quarter. Through three quarters of action, the Bluejays had just 23 points on the scoreboard.

In a low scoring opening half, it was Northwestern who held a 10-point advantage (25-15). The first quarter saw a 10-9 Red Raider advantage, but Northwestern turn it on in the second quarter outscoring the Bluejays 15-6 to jump out to their 10-point halftime lead. Molly Schany (Jr., Emmetsberg, Iowa) led all scorers with her eight points in the opening 30 minutes.

The turning point came in the third quarter, when the Red Raiders put up a quarter-high 24 points to officially race past Tabor. Northwestern was red hot in the frame, hitting 66.7% of their shots (8-for-12), using five Bluejay turnovers to take complete control of the contest.

"Our team was really locked into our game plan on both ends of the floor and executed well," noted Rotert. "Our pace in transition allowed us to create some separation in the third quarter, leading to some easy buckets.

The final frame saw Tabor outscore the Raiders, but it was too little, too late. Jacking up seven three-pointers, Tabor hit four of them to cut into Northwestern's largest lead of 23 points but the Raiders were able to weather the late storm and secure the 61-39 victory.

"Maddie (Jones) made some really big plays on the defensive end late in the game to help us secure the win and Molly (Schany) continued to be a strong presence for us in the paint," concluded Rotert.
