(RV) Northwestern Rolls Past Blue Hawks in Home Opener

Rotert remains undefeated in her Pizza Ranch Classic games

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The (RV) Northwestern College women's basketball team (3-0, 0-0 GPAC) opened play in the front of the home crowd tonight on Day One of the Pizza Ranch Classic, holding the Blue Hawks of Dickinson State (N.D.) (3-3, 0-0 NSAA) to just 38% from the floor in a 75-48 rout inside the Bultman Center Friday evening.
"After a slow defensive start, we were able to create some turnovers with our defensive pressure," noted head coach Kristin Rotert. "This allowed us to score some easy baskets in transition and settle into a great rhythm on the offensive end."

As Rotert eluded to, the slow start was apparent as Northwestern scored the first points of the contest thanks to a Maren Nerem (So., Edgerton, Minn.) lay-up, but it would be Dickinson State who controlled most of the first quarter thanks to three-point shot. The Blue Hawks would lead by as many as nine (15-6, 5:23) before and 11-2 Raider run tied it up at 17-17. The frame would end at 19-19, but the second quarter would be all Red Raiders.

A pair of free throws from Molly Schany (Jr., Emmetsburg, Iowa) put Northwestern up for good, sparking a 9-0 run to take complete control of the game. The Raiders defense would clamp down, allowing just nine Dickinson State points in the quarter to take the 36-28 halftime lead.

"We started the third quarter really well and were able to capitalize on some mismatches," noted Rotert.

The second half would see Northwestern flex their muscles, as Dickinson State would only muster 20 points in the final two quarters. The Red Raider offense would explode for 39, as a 20-5 fourth quarter slammed the door shut to seal the game.

"Our posts – Molly (Schany), Hannah (Nerem), and Maren (Nerem) – did a fantastic job controlling the paint, which allowed our guards to get out and make some big plays on the perimeter," concluded Rotert. "Maddie (Jones) and Taylor (VanderVelde) both had some big steals for us during our third quarter run."

GAME NOTES:
  • The non-conference regular season winning streak was pushed to 10 games.
  • For the second time in three games, NWC shot 50%+ from the floor.
  • For the third-straight game, the Red Raider defense held their opponent to under 40% shooting.
  • All five Red Raider starters notched double digit points in the win, led by Taylor VanderVelde with 16.
  • VanderVelde now just needs 14 points to crack 1,000-career points.
  • She also led the team with five rebounds; as 10 of the 29 Raider rebounds came on the offensive end.
  • As a team, the Raiders tallied 12 steals and scored 36 points on 34 Blue Hawk turnovers.
  • Northwestern had 44 paint points, 16 fast break points, and had 14 bench points.
