Men's Basketball to Continue GPAC Play with Briar Cliff and Concordia

Raiders look to extend their three-game winning streak

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – (RV) Northwestern (6-2, 1-1 GPAC) will look to continue their three-game winning streak as they face two Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) opponents in Briar Cliff and No. 23 Concordia (Neb.) this week.

LAST TIME OUT:
  • Northwestern played in a pair of games last weekend, defeating Governors State (Ill.) and Oak Hills Christian (Minn.) as part of the Dordt Thanksgiving Classic.
  • Dillon Carlson (Sr., Ankeny, Iowa) tied his career-high with 27 points on Friday, while Zach LaFave (Jr., Elkhorn, Neb.) also added a new career-high with 12 points.
  • The Raiders displayed balanced scoring in Saturday's win, as five players scored in double-figures.
  • Nathan Koole (Fr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) had 13 points on 6-10 shooting to mark a career-best.
NORTHWESTERN NOTES:
  • The Raiders enter Wednesday's matchup riding a three-game winning streak, tied for their longest streak of the season.
  • Northwestern went 3-0 last week with their two wins over the weekend and a GPAC road win at Midland on Tuesday.
  • Kaleb Booth (Fr., Carroll, Iowa) currently leads the GPAC and is 18th in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) in three-point percentage (62.5%).
  • Carlson's 20.1 points per outing sits fourth in the conference.
  • The Raiders are sixth in the NAIA in team made threes per game (11.3) and assists per game (20.0).
THE SERIES:
  • Briar Cliff swept the season series last year, defeating the Red Raiders 61-59 in the Bultman Center and 81-69 in Sioux City.
  • Quinn Vesey was the leading scorer in the January 15 matchup, dropping 22 points with six made threes.
  • The Raiders last defeated the Chargers on February 24, 2021, an 83-77 home victory.
  • Prior to last season, Northwestern was on a five-game winning streak against Briar Cliff.
POLL PARTY:
  • The Red Raiders were picked to finish third in this year's GPAC preseason poll after finishing third in the conference standings a year ago.
  • Briar Cliff picked up a second-place spot in the GPAC preseason poll following their first-place finish last season.
  • Concordia was picked to finish fourth, one spot behind Northwestern. The Bulldogs are also ranked No. 23 in the most recent NAIA Coaches' Poll.
SCOUTING THE CHARGERS:
  • The Chargers were the regular season champions in the GPAC a year ago, compiling a 15-5 conference record.
  • Head coach Mark Svagera was named the 2021-22 GPAC Coach of the Year.
  • Jaden Kleinhesselink returns for his fifth year after being named an honorable mention NAIA All-American as a senior.
  • Briar Cliff reached the Opening Round of the NAIA tournament in 2022, falling to Bethel (Kan.).
  • Kyle Boerhave leads the way in points and rebounds with 13.8 and 5.8, respectively.
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS:
  • Concordia enters the week with the second-best record in the GPAC, currently at 3-1 in the conference, 6-1 overall.
  • After defeating Waldorf (Iowa) on the road last Saturday, the Bulldogs face Morningside and Northwestern this week.
  • Concordia won the GPAC postseason title last year and advanced to the NAIA Quarterfinals.
  • Sophomore forward Noah Schutte is the team's leading scorer thus far, averaging 19.9 points through seven games.
