Balanced Approach Guides Raiders to Season-Opening Win

SALINA, Kan. – Northwestern picked up a season-opening win on the road, defeating Kansas Wesleyan 77-67.

The Raiders opened with six straight points as Trey Brandt put back a miss, Boston Ekart followed with a steal and layup, and Brennan Reid scored after another KWU turnover. After the Coyotes closed the gap to 17-12, Ekart hit a triple off Brandt's assist to start an 11-point burst that gave the Red Raiders a 28-12 advantage. The Raiders added baskets from Brandt, Reid and Reece Kircher before Max Dearborn's free throws capped the run. Northwestern finished the half with 28 points in the paint, a 20-10 rebounding edge and nine points off turnovers, and Ekart's second-chance basket with 14 seconds left sent the Raiders into halftime ahead 41-27.

Northwestern created separation in the second half with a nine-point run, getting baskets from Reid, Kircher and Caleb Grant to move ahead 59-37. Earlier, the Raiders answered the Coyotes' early scoring with paint baskets from Ekart and Brandt, an Ekart block, and Brandt's trey that made it 50-34 with 16:47 left. KWU cut into the margin during a Red Raiders scoring drought in the waning minutes, closing to 67-61 before Brandt ended the stretch with a bucket.
