Raiders Pick Up First GPAC Win at Midland

Carlson and Onken set pace in road victory

FREMONT, Neb.  – The (RV) Northwestern men's basketball team (4-2, 1-1 GPAC) won a hard-fought road battle on Tuesday, defeating Midland (4-5, 0-3 GPAC) at the Wikert Event Center.

The Raiders used a balanced scoring effort led by Dillon Carlson (Sr., Ankeny, Iowa) with 25 in a game where Northwestern never relinquished the lead.

Northwestern charged out of the gates, taking an 8-2 lead through the first three minutes, an advantage that ballooned up to 14 points at the 6:40 mark on a Craig Sterk (Jr., McBain, Mich.) layup. Midland continued to stay within reach however, keeping their deficit at single-digits at the halftime break. Matt Onken (R-Jr., Marshall, Minn.) tallied 16 points through the opening 20 minutes of play.

The Warriors came as close as five points twice in the final three minutes, but it was not enough as the Raiders sealed the game with five made free throws and a bucket from Grant DeMeulenaere (Sr., Altoona, Iowa).

"Our guys would like to be 2-0 right now, but every win on the road in the GPAC is a great win," commented head coach Kris Korver. "I think we have a group that can do some good things offensively, and I think we're learning where we have to go with the basketball when we need a big basket. I thought our guys did a good job on the glass tonight, and guys like Matt, Craig, and Keaton asserted themselves inside."

GAME NOTES
  • Dillon Carlson led the Raiders in scoring for the second-consecutive game, scoring 25 points.
  • Matt Onken added a season-high 24 points.
  • The Raiders outrebounded Midland 39-23.

  • Craig Sterk recorded his third-straight game with double-figures scoring, netting 18 points.
