(RV) Raiders Open Season with Dominant Win Over Bethel

Rotert tallies 25th career win and Schany joins the 400-rebound club

NORTH NEWTON, Kan. – The (RV) Northwestern College women's basketball team (1-0, 0-0 GPAC) got off to a fast start this season with a dominant 99-54 win on the road at Bethel College (Kan.) (0-1, 0-0 KCAC) as 11 Raiders put points on the board, led by Molly Schany and Maddie Jones who both had 17 points.
"Great win to kick off the season against a tough and physical Bethel squad. They made us work for every basket, especially in the first half," said head coach Kristin Rotert. "I'm proud of how we handled their full-court pressure and the toughness we showed playing in a difficult environment."

The two teams took the first quarter to feel each other out and get acclimated, as both teams opened their 2022-23 campaigns tonight. By the end of the first quarter, Northwestern held a slim 21-17 lead. Led by Schany (Jr., Emmetsburg, Iowa) and Hali Anderson (So., St. Ansgar, Iowa) who had six points each. Ironically, the first quarter proved to be the best quarter for the Raiders, shooting 61.5% (8-for-13) from the floor.

Northwestern took complete control of the contest in the second quarter, outscoring the Threshers 22-5 in the quarter to take a commanding 21-point lead into the locker room. The run was highlighted by no one particular player in particular, as the leading scorer in the period was Taylor VanderVelde (Sr., Sioux Falls, Iowa) with five points. Unselfish play and Thresher turnovers led to easy fast break scoring opportunities that Northwestern took advantage of.

The second half saw the Red Raiders keep the pressure on, not allowing any potential for a Bethel comeback. Rotert was able to put in some bench players, as Northwestern would end the game with 39 bench points. The team, on the night, shot a blistering 51.6 percent from the floor to ease to the 99-54 victory to open the 2022-23 campaign.

"We were able to separate ourselves in transition over the course of 40 minutes," concluded Rotert. "Overall, it was an extremely balanced effort for our team as all 12 players contributed, led by Molly (Schany) and Maddie (Jones) each with 17 points."
