No. 25 Red Raiders Open GPAC Play with Road Win at CSM

Molly Schany records first double-double of the season for the Raiders

OMAHA, Neb. – The No. 25-ranked Northwestern College women's basketball team (5-0, 1-0 GPAC) used a scoring-surge in the second half to open Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) play with a 67-47 win over the Flames of the College of Saint Mary (2-4, 0-2 GPAC) Wednesday night down in Omaha.

"A great start defensively but a slow start offensively…took awhile to settle into our zone offense. We were able to settle down into the zone offense in the second half," noted head coach Kristin Rotert. "I was really happy how we separated ourselves in transitions. Emilee (Danner) was really good and active for us in the zone defense. Taylor (VanderVelde) was a good facilitator for us tonight, saw the zone and the floor well.

Molly Schany (Jr., Emmetsburg, Iowa) paced Northwestern in the opening quarter with six points, followed by the five points from Emilee Danner (Sr., Westside, Iowa) off the bench.

The Red Raiders began the quarter on an 8-0 spurt CSM went on a 7-0 run after NWC opened up a 14-point lead early in the second quarter (24-10), cutting the Raider lead to 24-17. A much needed three-pointer from freshman Payton Beckman (Panora, Iowa) killed the Flames momentum, putting the lead back into double digits.

Maddie Jones (Sr., Twin Lakes, Iowa) led the Raiders with eight points at the break, while Schany brought down six boards in the first half. Despite the first bucket going the way of CSM, Northwestern led the entire first half, leading by as much as 14 in the second quarter and took a 29-22 lead into the locker room.

The second half saw the Red Raiders take complete control of the game, flexing their muscles and shooting 46.7% from the floor in the half, showing they deserve to be ranked inside the top-25. Danner erupted in the second half, putting up 20 points to lead the team.

GAME NOTES:
  • NWC won their second-straight league-opener, both being against the Flames.
