Danner's 27 Points Powers Northwestern Past Doane

Raiders shoot 50% or better from the floor for the third time this season

CRETE, Neb. – The No. 25-ranked Northwestern College women's basketball team (6-0, 2-0 GPAC) had three student-athletes with 15+ points as the Raiders took down the Doane Tigers (4-1, 2-1 GPAC) in their second-straight road game to begin the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) slate.

"This was a really tough road win against a good opponent," noted head coach Kristin Rotert. "Doane is a tough team to defend on the perimeter and I thought we did a great job at all positions."

The Raiders would build a nine-point lead when the buzzer sounded to end the opening period of play, 21-12 behind seven points in the quarter from Emilee Danner (Sr., Westside, Iowa). The senior also recorded two blocks in the quarter. Northwestern set the pace in the opening quarter, shooting 53.8 percent from the field and holding the Tigers to just 35.7 percent from the floor.

"Emilee (Danner) was a big boost off our bench tonight and very active around the basket early," noted Rotert. "We were able to get her some touches in the first quarter and she played with a lot of toughness in the paint."

Doane held their largest lead of three points (36-33, 1:40) late in the second quarter. Northwestern would go on a five-point run to end the half, taking a 40-36 lead into the locker room. Doane would never take the lead the rest of the game.
"We had a significant size advantage in the post and worked to get Molly (Schany) some good touches," said Rotert. "She did a great job winning in the paint."

The Tigers would keep things close in the third quarter, but the Raiders would keep them at arms length. Doane cut the lead down to one-point twice in the quarter, but a layup from Taylor VanderVelde (Sr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) and a three-point bucket from Danner kept Doane at bay.

"Maddie (Jones) did a great job settling us offensively in the second half and making decisions late in the game," concluded Rotert. "She was aggressive off of ball screens and finished some tough plays around the rim."

Northwestern continued to push their lead in the final quarter, leading by double digits most of the frame. Taking a 64-54 lead with 6:50 left, the Raiders were able to propel themselves to victory. NWC shot 75 percent from the free throw line to keep the Tigers from sneaking up on them late. The Raiders would leave Crete with the 11-point 81-70 victory.
