Raiders move to 4-0 with 83-61 Win Over Trinity Christian

Taylor VanderVelde notches 1,000th career point in the win

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The (RV) Northwestern College women's basketball team (4-0, 0-0 GPAC) stayed perfect on the young season and winning their second game in as many days, downing the Trinity Christian College Trolls (3-2, 3-0 CCAC) on Day 2 of the Pizza Ranch Classic. Taylor VanderVelde becomes the 36th Red Raider in program history to joining the 1,000-point club in the win.
"It was another great home win for us after a short turnaround. We separated ourselves in transition and did a good job controlling the pace of the game early," noted head coach Kristin Rotert. "Offensively, we did a great job sharing the basketball and making the extra pass. We were diligent on the offensive glass and able to create extra possessions with 16 offensive rebounds."

With 2:39 remaining in the fourth quarter, VanderVelde (Sr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) notches her 1,000th career point in a Red Raider uniform, becoming the 36th Red Raider to do so. She sits at exactly 1,000 points after her 14-point performance this evening.

"It was exciting to watch Taylor (VanderVelde) reach such a great accomplishment," said Rotert. "I'm incredibly proud of the work she's put in to get to this point and how much she's grown as a person and player during her time at NWC."

The Trolls of Trinity Christian College scrapped and clawed all game long, but it was the Red Raiders depth and the Red Raider faithful that proved to be the difference inside the Bultman Center this afternoon. The Trolls held a 13-12 advantage in the middle of the opening quarter, but a 10-0 run spurred by an Emilee Danner (Sr., Westside, Iowa) allowed the Raiders to jump out toa 22-13 lead. Danner notched six of those 10 points in that span.

The Red Raiders would push their lead up to as many as 18 (39-21, 2:46) in the second quarter, but TCC would end the half on a small 5-2 spurt to cut the Raider halftime lead to 12 at 41-29. Northwestern would lead by double digits the rest of the way, holding their largest lead of 22 points when the final horn sounded, as Northwestern moved to 4-0 on the young season with the 83-69 win.

"Molly (Schany) did a great job running the floor in transition and establishing a post presence early," concluded Rotert.
